The Gardeners of Spokane

The Gardeners of Spokane This is a nonprofit club affiliated with The Gardeners of America. Membership is open to any interested gardeners - of all levels of experience!

The Gardeners of Spokane is affiliated with the Gardeners of America. Members of the Gardeners of America are actively dedicated to increasing the productivity of their home garden, the beauty of their surroundings, and improving our environment through gardening. The purpose of the Gardeners of Spokane is to devote its energies to the promotion of the full appreciation of gardens, and to the cult

ivation of higher gardening standards in Spokane. For the benefit of individuals; to develop the love of plants in the hearts of children, particularly those whose opportunities are restricted. To develop, promote, and complete enduring friendship, civic activities, and the general interest in individual or private gardens, community planning and parks. The more one gardens, the more one grows! The Gardeners of Spokane is comprised of members of all ages and gardening backgrounds, including families, who pay a small membership fee annually. The club meets the third Thursday of each month at the Northeast Community Center (4001 N Cook, Spokane, WA). The club devotes its time to plant sales, educational gardening booths at fairs & gardening events, making/selling wreaths around the holidays, judging plants in gardening contests, guest speakers on gardening topics, garden tours, community projects (planting with the children of the Hutton Settlement, sponsoring community gardens, among other things), and joining together with other gardening enthusiasts (of all levels of experience: beginner to lifelong master!). Each member or family receives a monthly Gardeners of Spokane newsletter called The Nite Crawler. For more information, please e-mail [email protected]. The club has elected officers each year that serve in various leadership and organizational capacities for the club.

Did you know that Chrysanthemums are edible? Here is a recipe for a sweet sesame dressing salad, made with the leaves of the plant! These perennial flowers originate in Asia, and this is a Japanese recipe that pairs nicely with our June meeting at the Japanese Gardens, coming up this Thursday June 21st at 6pm! (Check out our events page to RSVP. All welcome!)

Chrysanthemum Leaves Goma-ae is a side dish made with sweet sesame dressing. This is a pure vegetarian dish and very quick to make.

May's Plant Profile - Salvia Splendens "Reddy Bright Red":

β€œThis Plant of the Month is an annual. Salvia Reddy is the only natural dwarf, non-stretching Salvia variety on the market. Salvia Reddy has proven to be of great value to growers and consumers. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are not necessary. Using Salvia Reddy would enable growers to take a step forward in environmentally conscious growing. Because Reddy refuses to stretch, there is no need to use growth regulars. This makes Reddy the perfect Salvia for plug and pack production. Another advantage is the much longer shelf life throughout the whole chain. Reddy produces a large number of densely placed bright-colored flowers above dark green foliage. It is day-length neutral and performs splendidly in the garden. Plants will be available at May’s meeting!” – Steve Nokes, Club Treasurer & Master Gardener

This isn't the sexiest gardening topic, but timely. Even though the east coast locations are traditionally more concerned about ticks in the outdoors, we are not immune in the states of Washington, Idaho and Oregon. We have attached the information from the WA Dept. of Health about tick bite prevention and signs/symptoms of tick-borne diseases. Note also that you can send a tick to the DOH and they will ID it for you which is helpful in case you or your pets were to become ill.
