Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.
Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free (two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official January 1, 1863). The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order.
However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. The name “Juneteenth” is derived from early celebrations of “June Nineteenth,” when the month and day of the celebration was shortened into one word, “Juneteenth.”

One week ago, we came together to celebrate, honor, and uplift our community. ❤️🖤💚

Our Juneteenth celebration was filled with connection, culture, joy, and meaningful moments that reminded us of the power of showing up for one another.

To our Pillar Award winners… congratulations! Your leadership, dedication, and continued commitment to our community do not go unnoticed. To all of our nominees, thank you for the contributions you make and the ways you continue to create a stronger community. We cannot thrive without people who are willing to show up, serve, and do the work.

Keep showing up. Keep making an impact. We see you, we need you, and we appreciate you. 🤎

To our participants, volunteers, community partners, vendors, performers, and everyone who helped make this celebration possible … thank you. Your time, energy, and support helped create a space where we could honor history, celebrate culture, and experience the joy of community.

This celebration was only the beginning. ✨ Stay tuned for some big changes, new opportunities, and exciting things ahead as we continue building together.

Next Friday is Juneteenth! Join SCAR at the Juneteenth Celebration in Riverfront Park where we will celebrate emancipation day.

This event is a vibrant, inclusive celebration for all ages at Riverfront Park, North Bank. Attendees can expect vendors, food, music, entertainment, and community organizations. This event is fully accessible and completely free for everyone!

SCAR will be present, handing out stickers, buttons, and educational materials. Stop by to meet the staff and learn more about the work we do!

Spokane! It's time to Celebrate, Educate, and Unify!
Join us, June 19-20th, 2026, for the 15th Annual Juneteenth Celebration: "Unfinished Dreams of Freedom."

This year's Park Celebration, we collaborated with the City of Spokane. So, this June 19th, we are at Riverfront Park - North Bank.
YES, you read that correctly! This family-friendly event will feature a variety of activities, delicious food, live performances, local vendors, and community resources.

On June 20th, we are at the FOX Theatre for a night of entertainment and fellowship where we can praise, honor, and recognize the sacrifices and service of those who help uplift the African-American community in Spokane.
