At 21, Damien is already a blood donor, a volunteer and an example of how much one student can do. The university student first gave back as a blood donor. After seeing how Vitalant volunteers made donors feel welcomed and cared for, he decided donating wasn't the only way he wanted to help.

For the past year, Damien has volunteered at blood drives with one goal: make every donor want to come back. Now, he's challenging other students to find their way to make an impact, too.

"You don't need a medical degree to save a life. You don't need a lot of money to make a massive impact."

Dawn couldn’t change what her friend was going through. But she discovered there was something she could do.

Watching a friend face cancer opened Dawn’s eyes to how blood and platelet donations can support patients during cancer treatment. She started donating blood as often as she could, then learned she could also donate platelets.

Platelets help stop bleeding and are especially important for patients whose platelet counts are low because of cancer treatments or other medical conditions. That can make platelet donors an important part of a patient’s care.

What started as a way to help during a difficult time became part of Dawn’s life. She got to know the familiar faces at Vitalant, brought a laptop or book along for her platelet donations, and this year, her husband started donating blood, too. ❤️

Dawn may never know the patients who receive her donations, but that doesn’t make the connection any less meaningful.

“I like knowing that, in some small way, I may be helping give someone more time with the people they love.”

Who says donating blood can’t be fun and exciting?

Just ask Annette! She goes into every donations hoping to upgrade her donation to a Power Red, but in the past, she hasn’t been eligible. But, this time... this time was different. 🎉

“I always go into my donation wanting to do a double red, but I’ve never been eligible. To my surprise, I was able to do a double red donation, and I was super excited!”

Her brother needed enough blood to replace his entire blood volume five times.

That was the moment blood donation became personal for Jamie.

For nearly 20 years, she’s hosted blood drives through her church because she believes that when there’s a need in your community, you help.

Then, in 2009, her only brother was involved in a life-threatening accident. During his first three days in the ICU, he needed so many transfusions that his entire blood volume was replaced five times.

Dozens of strangers donated blood without ever knowing who would receive it. Jamie will never know their names. But she knows what their generosity gave her family: more time with someone they love.

Today, Jamie hosts two blood drives each year and donates blood herself four times annually.

She keeps showing up because she knows what it means when someone else does, too.
