Have you been on the Trolley Trail recently? You'll find some improvements and signage on the northern and southern ends, thanks to a grant from Spokane Parks Foundation !

The Spokane Parks Foundation is excited to support the Grandview Thorpe Neighborhood Council as it works to improve a section of the Trolley Trail and its rich history as a critical link between the West Plains and Spokane.

The first Washington Water Power electric trolleys started rolling on the Cheney-Medical Lake to Spokane route in 1907. By 1910, over a quarter of a million people rode that route every year.

Trolleys crossed the Latah Valley over a long, wooden trestle completed in 1904. From there, the route climbed to the Garden Springs station, then rose along the edge of the Grandview bluff and into the western plains on the way to Cheney.

But the arrival of cars changed everything. The route closed in 1922, and development or private property swallowed most evidence of the old line. But, in the Grandview/Thorpe neighborhood, 1.5 miles of the trail still exists, and residents continue to work to ensure it remains a public recreational asset for the region.

The Spokane Parks Foundation is proud to help neighborhood planners buy informational signs and fencing to improve public safety and to ensure everyone who visits the trail understands its historical significance. The signage, which will be installed this spring, will create the first formal point of interest along the historic trail segment and enhance the educational value for trail users.

We look forward to seeing the neighborhood’s other plans to improve the area.
