THE SPOKANE AVIATION STORY:
If you're looking for a good summertime read and you enjoy aviation history, check out "The Spokane Aviation Story", 1910-1941, by James P. "Jim" McGoldrick II. According to publishers Tony and Suzanne Bamonte, at the age of 10, McGoldrick was an impassioned student of aviation and a young fan of famous Charles Lindbergh when he flew into Spokane in 1927. That encounter played "a major role in Jim McGoldrick's life -- and he in Spokane's aviation history. From that time forward, he came to know firsthand virtually all the important people and events connected with Spokane aviation and would become a major booster of the city's aviation development."

The book --now in its second edition-- was nearly an immediate sellout when first published in 1982 by Ye Galleon Press. This edition, the Bamontes say, includes "additional historical information and many new photographs, yet the essential core remains of Jim McGoldrick's original popular account of the formative period of Spokane aviation". Check it out!

Check out the glowing exhaust as this McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier makes a night landing on board the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4). Also note the sparks around the air intakes. Maybe one of our resident aero guys can explain what is causing that. The green lights that click on after…

"Time Capsule at Halfway Mark"

Gathering dust in the old base dining facility of Geiger Field, now Spokane International Airport, is a World War II-era aerial bomb, welded shut in 1966, with unknown artifacts inside, "items typical of the 1960s." It now serves as a time capsule. The former WWII-era weapon had been on display at Fairchild Air Force Base in previous decades. When it is opened in 2066,the time capsule will be housed at the Honor Point Museum at Felts Field in Spokane.

The former bomb, now a symbol of the military history of the region, is 'a snapshot in time, providing us a unique glimpse into the past,' said Jim O'Connell, 92nd Air Refueling Wing historian. 'It affords us a precious opportunity to better understand and appreciate those Airmen who created the legacy of excellence that we know today.'"
