Governments and health authorities are withholding crucial information about COVID-19 deaths, hospitalizations, and the risks of long COVID. This silence is dangerous, echoing the devastating reality that 'silence equals death'.

If you are a gig worker or independent contractor, you already know there is no paid sick leave, no employer disability coverage, no safety net for when your health prevents you from working.

Long COVID is making that gap devastating for hundreds of thousands of workers, disproportionately Black and Latino workers who are overrepresented in app-based gig roles. The financial distress associated with Long COVID can last up to three years. For workers with no benefits, that timeline is not survivable on its own.

The protections that would make chronic illness manageable exist for some workers and not for others. That is a policy choice. And it is a policy choice that can be changed.

Share this post and help make the case for the workers the system was not designed to protect.

Many parents have been reassured that COVID reinfections in children are no big deal, especially with omicron variants that tend to cause milder illness. New research published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases suggests we need to rethink that.

A large study using data from 40 U.S. children's hospitals found that kids and teens who got COVID a second time were more than twice as likely to develop long COVID compared to those experiencing their first infection. The risk of myocarditis was more than three times higher, and the risk of blood clots more than doubled.

Just as concerning: having had COVID before did not appear to protect children from developing long COVID after a second infection. The researchers describe the risk as cumulative.

This study used clinician-documented diagnoses from real medical records rather than surveys, making its findings particularly credible.

If you are a parent, pediatrician, or school health professional, this is important context for thinking about COVID prevention in children. Mild acute symptoms do not rule out lasting effects.

57% of people with Long COVID report experiencing cognitive symptoms every single day. Brain fog. Difficulty finding words. Trouble concentrating for sustained periods. Memory that does not work the way it used to.

These symptoms do not show up on a standard lab panel, which means people experiencing them are frequently told nothing is wrong. They are navigating a serious, documented neurological condition without a diagnosis, without accommodation, and often without being believed.

Long COVID hits hardest between ages 35 and 44. These are prime career years, and the workforce impact is already being felt.

The research exists. It is past time for the policy and employer response to catch up.

We already knew that having diabetes made COVID-19 more dangerous. But new research from Italy raises a different and equally important question: can COVID-19 actually cause diabetes?

A major study tracking nearly 250,000 adults in Milan found that people who had COVID-19 were 13% more likely to develop diabetes in the following two years compared to people who tested negative. For women between the ages of 41 and 60, the increased risk was even higher, at 31%.

The researchers used a carefully matched study design and adjusted for health conditions, socioeconomic factors, and vaccination history to make the comparison as fair as possible.

This adds to a growing body of evidence that the long-term effects of COVID-19 go well beyond the lungs and include real metabolic consequences. If you or someone you know had COVID and has since noticed changes in blood sugar or energy levels, it may be worth discussing with a doctor.

Wail of a Tale Productions partners with the Center for Independent Documentary on The Air We Share
Wail of a Tale Productions is proud to announce a fiscal sponsorship partnership with the Center for Independent Documentary (CID) for our feature documentary The Air We Share.
The Air We Share asks a question at the heart of American democracy: can a country keep its promise to its children if it cannot give them safe air in its own public schools? An estimated 5.8 million children in the United States are living with Long COVID, and the number continues to grow with each reinfection. Cleaner air in a classroom lowers that risk. A national standard already exists, yet most school buildings do not meet it, and the families and teachers inside have no way of knowing. The film makes the invisible visible, explains what is at stake, and shows that it can be fixed.
CID has supported independent documentary filmmakers for more than four decades, and its 501(c)(3) status means that gifts made through CID in support of The Air We Share are tax deductible. This partnership gives the film a trusted home for charitable giving as it moves through development and production.
