We wish everyone a meaningful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸
Today we remember those who gave their lives in service to the United States, including Marine Corps Corporal Joseph Vittori, an Italian American whose courage in the Korean War remains a lasting example of sacrifice and duty.
During intense combat, Vittori repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to defend his position and lead his fellow Marines, ultimately giving his life in action. For his extraordinary heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor — the nation’s highest recognition for valor.
His story stands as a powerful reminder of the Italian American service tradition — one of the largest ethnic groups to serve in World War II and beyond. From the beaches of Europe to the mountains of Korea and every conflict since, Italian Americans have served across all branches of the U.S. military, often while facing hardship and prejudice at home, yet continuing to answer the call.
Today, we honor Cpl. Vittori and all who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their legacy is one of courage, duty, and remembrance.
