Spokane Conservation District Protecting natural resources in the Spokane area-- from the ground up!

The Spokane Conservation District (SCD) is one of 47 conservation districts in the State of Washington, and one of nearly 3,000 conservation districts in the country. SCD has been active in the Spokane-area since the 1940s, teaching & facilitating sustainable land use and conservation practices to meet current needs while also planning resource use for the future. A conservation district provides technical assistance and tools to help landowners manage and protect land and water resources throughout the United States. Conservation districts work with landowners on a voluntary basis, which means they have no regulatory authority. We provide assistance & education to landowners through our programs and departments: Forestry (urban and rural), Water Resources, Soil Science, Production Agriculture, Small Acreage, Environmental Education and Outreach.

A home still standing. New trees taking root. Two reminders of why wildfire preparation and recovery matter.

Earlier this week, Washington State Conservation Commission staff joined us for a tour of wildfire impacts and recovery across Spokane County.

At a home spared during the Autumn Lane Fire, the landowner shared the steps they believe helped protect it: removing two fir trees overhanging the roof, installing concrete decking and creating a five-foot rock buffer along the home.

At a property burned in the Oregon Road Fire three years ago, we saw new growth emerging just months after spring seeding with ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and western larch.

This is why we work alongside landowners before and after wildfire. Preparation can make a difference, and recovery begins with actions that help the land heal.

Preparation made a difference for one Spokane County family. 🌲

After a free Firewise home assessment, they worked with Washington DNR to thin trees, clear brush and reduce wildfire fuels around their home.

When wildfire swept through their property, it destroyed two barns in untreated areas. But when the flames reached the acre they had thinned, the fire slowed—and their home was still standing.

Read their full story here:

There’s a few places where the Spokane fires didn’t burn quite so hot or quite so fast. Officials with the Washington state Department of Natural Resources say that’s because trees in these areas had been thinned. That helps make a forest ecosystem healthier.

A big thank-you to Spokane Conservation District and Allison Ranusch for joining us at the Spokane Strong Wildfire Relief Event! ❤️🌲

We appreciate you sharing resources and connecting with neighbors facing the difficult work of recovering after wildfire. Having people who understand forest health and land restoration available to answer questions makes a difference.

Spokane Conservation District helps local landowners care for their forests, soil, and water. Their forestry team offers guidance on tree health, forest management, and reducing wildfire fuels, alongside resources for wildfire recovery and creating more fire-resilient properties.

Recovery includes the land around our homes, too. Thank you for bringing that knowledge to our event and supporting the long-term health of our community. We hope to work together again as Spokane continues rebuilding! 🙌
