YMCA Reading Buddies Reading Buddies The YMCA of the Okobojis offers a academic-based youth mentoring program, Reading Buddies. The books selected by ISU Extension Dickinson County.

The program matches people from the community with TK or Kindergarten students attending Okoboji, Harris-Lake Park, and Spirit Lake schools. Reading Buddies is based on the Raising Readers/Storypals program, which implements the Dialogic Reading Method. Each month the students receive from their buddy a book, school supply, and an activity to complete at home with a family member.

General information

What does a Reading Buddy do? Its a commitment of 30 minutes once a month for six months during the school year. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application, pass a background check, complete an online child abuse training, and first time volunteers must attend a face to face training about the Dialogic Reading Method. Volunteers must meet and sign in at the school office before each visit. All buddies will walk together to the classroom. Please be at the office five minutes before the set meeting time. Buddies can only meet with their student in the classroom.
