Dickinson County Courthouse Veterans Plaza Renovation Discussions Resume

Discussions regarding proposed renovations to the Veterans Memorial Plaza at the Dickinson County Courthouse have resumed, led by local veteran Steve Anderson and a group of fellow veterans who met with the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors.

Project Need: County supervisors noted that the plaza's walkway and pavers are deteriorating and require repairs.

Estimated Costs: Current estimates put the project cost at approximately $725,000, with an estimated split of $350,000 from the county and $375,000 from the veterans' group. Engineering and specification costs are estimated at an additional $90,000.

Fundraising & Next Steps: Approximately $87,000 has been raised to date. Supervisors requested a more specific breakdown of cost-sharing responsibilities, and Anderson agreed to return with a refined proposal before a formal commitment is made.

📢 Spirit Lake Schools Facility Improvement Plan Update

The Spirit Lake School Board voted 5-0 to move forward with a $69.9 million bond referendum proposal for the upcoming November 3, 2026 election ballot.

Key Details of the Proposal:
Total Cost: $69.9M (covers elementary, middle, and high school updates, athletic field lighting/turf, and an additional bus barn. The previously discussed athletic bubble was removed).

Taxpayer Impact: If approved, property taxes would increase by $2.32 per $1,000 of assessed value. For a home assessed at $300,000, this represents an estimated increase of $278 per year over the 20-year term of the bond.

Next Steps: The board must collect at least 150 petition signatures by August 26 to formally set the referendum measure for the November ballot.

Members of the DCTA board met with school leadership earlier to discuss the scope and financial implications of the project. We encourage all taxpayers to review the details, ask questions, and take advantage of upcoming public tours to stay informed before voting in November.
