Corporal Lyle Scott Tate was a Portland son who answered the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War. Raised in Oregon, he lived in Portland until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on December 14, 1965. He became a Rifleman with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion,
3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division-serving in one of the war's most dangerous regions near Khe Sanh.
In May 1967 his battalion took part in Operation Beacon Star, fighting fierce battles near Hill 778 northwest of the Khe Sanh Airfield. Amid intense combat, Marines faced heavy losses and relentless danger. On May 9 1967, corporal Tate gave his life in the line of duty due to hostile action involving an explosive device . He was only 20 years old.

of the top 10 Vietnam War photographs: "Help From Above"
"Help From Above," captured by freelance Associated Press photographer Art Greenspon. It famously depicts a soldier standing with both arms raised high to guide an incoming medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) helicopter into a dense jungle clearing. The photo was taken on taken on April 1, 1968.
The soldier with his arms raised is Sgt. Maj. Watson Baldwin. In the same frame, helmetless soldiers (including Sgt. Tim Wintenburg) carry a wounded comrade past a fallen, helmetless soldier (Spc. 4
Dallas Brown).
The photograph became one of the defining, unflinching visual records of the Vietnam War's brutal conditions. It was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and inspired the promotional poster for the scene in the movie “Platoon”

Vietnam
1968-1969: Chuck Mawhinney and the Marine Corps M40
Chuck Mawhinney was the deadliest sniper in United States Marine Corps history. He recorded 103 confirmed kills and 216 probable kills during a 16-month tour in Vietnam.
He graduated Scout Sniper School at Camp Pendleton and deployed with the 1st Marine Division, serving mainly with Delta Company, 5th Marines near Da Nang.
His primary rifle was the
Re*****on M40. This bolt-action sniper rifle was chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. It was based on the commercial Re*****on Model 40X with a heavy barrel and walnut stock. The M40 featured a Redfield 3-9x40 variable scope and delivered ~ MOA accuracy in skilled hands.
Mawhinney also used an M14 with Starlight night scope for select operations.
On Valentine's Day 1969, Mawhinney positioned himself near a river during a monsoon.
When a large North Vietnamese platoon tried to cross, he fired 16 shots in roughly 30 seconds that resulted in 16 headshots, effectively stopping the attack.
Mawhinney left the Marines in 1970.
He returned to Oregon and worked over 20 years for the U.S. Forest Service, rarely speaking about his service — even to his wife.
His record stayed quiet until the early 1990s when it was verified against Carlos Hathcock's claims.
His original M40 rifle is now on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Mawhinney passed away in 2024.

War strips away glory and leaves only sacrifice. Amid the chaos of Vietnam, exhausted Marines cling to life as wounded comrades are carried from the battlefield-an enduring reminder that every victory and every loss came at such a high human cost. When you view the young faces, the elements of war, the loss, pain, desperation it gives new appreciation to The Wall That Heals. We simply can never forget the epic sacrifice so many made along with their families.
