An update from Samantha McMichael from Friday’s service event that all FFA members participate in!

In the morning before, we traveled to the Smithsonian Museums and the Holocaust Museum we spent time making oatmeal meals for homeless people in the area. This activity took about two hours. We added oats, cinnamon, freeze-dried apples, and sugar into bags and weighed them to make sure each bag had the same amount. Then, we packaged them into boxes. Overall, WLC packaged 65,000 breakfast meals. This activity showed how small acts of service can make a big difference in helping others in our communities.

Here is one of two updates from Samantha McMichael about Friday, our last day in the city! It was a great weekend in DC! Thanks again to all of our supporters who made it possible for us to attend this life-changing trip!

Sophia, Abby and I chose to tour, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. we toured the Natural Museum with our community groups. When we were finished with the natural museum we headed with Ms. Dicke to the Holocaust Museum where we saw many heart breaking stories about life during the Holocaust. On our way back to meet with our community groups we had the opportunity to see display of a Case IH tractor by the United States Department of Agriculture building to celebrate America’s 250 year birthday. We also go to watch this cool video near the tractor in an area called the People’s Garden. This is a growing space to help educate community members of the various crops and flowers that can be grown. Follow the link to check out the video! (https://www.voiceofthefarmergarden.org/usda-garden?pgid=mmv60mja-d9e99125-229d-4ce0-8add-7756820f0faa). When we completed our tours we headed back on the metro and headed to our hotel to eat some dinner and go to our community groups for the last time, then go to large groups to celebrate our week at WLC. Then we headed to reflection to say our final good byes to all the people we met.

Day 3 - Morning update from Abigail Kill

Today we woke up bright and early so we would have time to go to the Capitol Building. We got a delicious breakfast then proceeded to head to the metro station (for the FIRST time) to head to the Capitol. We got pictures in front of the building with the entire group of FFA members and just us from Spencerville. We had free time in the city after that and we decided to go to the United States Botanical Garden and spend our time looking at plants. Also there was exhibit that highlighted various farming practices and techniques around the world, like farming rice in China and Tulips in Dublin. Then we left to head back to the hotel on the Metro where we spent much of our time in leadership sessions with our Community Groups to work on our LTS plans!

Day 2, from Sam McMichael!

Today during our sessions, we learned how to start our LTS project, which is a project we create at WLC to bring back home and help improve our communities. Later that evening, we walked around Washington and visited the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, Jefferson Memorial and Korean War Memorial. Visiting these memorials reminded me how important leadership is and made me think about the impact one person can have. Walking through all of this history showed me that our sore feet were nothing compared to the sacrifices these leaders made to help shape America into what it is today.

Here is Sophia Seibert’s recap of Day 1 of WLC! Stay tuned for Day 2 updates! Thank you to the Spencerville FFA Alumni and the Ohio FFA Alumni Association for their monetary contributions to allow these girls to attend!

Our trip to WLC had us waking up early in the morning to catch our flight. When we arrived in Washington, D.C., we dropped our stuff off at the hotel that would become our home for the week. Then it was time to eat! We ate at an amazing Italian restaurant in town called Lillies. After our bellies were full, we decided to head to the zoo. We had a great time looking at all the animals, but we were most excited to see the new baby elephant. Finally, the WLC conference started. We checked in and began making new friends. We got to meet our groups and roommates for the week. We are all very excited to see what WLC has in store for us!

✨ FFA Senior Spotlight ✨

Leah Elling

Tell us about your SAE!
My SAE was based around dog sitting for various families and working at The Barker Shop in Spencerville as a dog washer.

What is your most memorable FFA moment? Through my time in FFA there have been so many moments which I will treasure forever, but for me walking across stage at State Convention in 2025 to get my State FFA Degree is by far my favorite one.

What are your plans post graduation?
I will be attending The Ohio State University Lima Campus to major in a dual licensure of Intervention and Primary Education teaching within the grades of K-5.

Provide your best piece of advice to younger members!
Branch yourself out, take every opportunity, make new friends, and hold onto those connections.

Through all your agricultural classes at Spencerville what was your favorite lab or activity that you completed in class.
Mine would be the designing flowers with platform lab my sophomore year in Animal and Plant Science.

Good luck Leah + we look forward to seeing what you will accomplish!
