Some very important words to share from our friends at Carolina Street Cats ๐
One of the scariest things we see in animal welfare is โsanctuaryโ being used as a shield from scrutiny.
๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐น๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐.
โผ๏ธThere is a limit to the number of animals any person, foster network, facility, sanctuary, or rescue can safely and humanely care for at one time.
That number can grow with more money, more space, more staff, more fosters, more veterinary support, more infrastructure.
What it cannot do is magically disappear because someone refuses to say no.

โWhere are the animals six months later?
โHow many are currently in care?
โHow many have been adopted, transferred, returned, died, euthanized or are still sitting there?
โWho is providing their daily care?
โWho is addressing medical needs?
โWhere are new animals quarantined?
โHow many animals can one organization actually house before the quality of care drops?
These are not hateful questions.

People who hoard animals do not always start out looking like monsters.
๐Sometimes they start out wanting to save every animal.
๐Sometimes the language changes from โwe canโt say noโ to โsanctuary.โ
๐Sometimes anyone who asks questions becomes a hater.
๐Sometimes anyone who speaks up is threatened with potential legal action.
๐Sometimes donors are told the animals are safe, while more and more animals keep pouring through the door.

A responsible rescue knows its limits.

A responsible rescue has records.

A responsible rescue can explain where its animals are and what happened to them.

A responsible rescue understands that saying no to the next animal may be exactly what protects the hundred already depending on them.
So yes, when we see rescues taking in huge numbers of animals week after week, we think people should ask questions.
Not because rescue is bad.
Because unquestioned rescue is how horror stories get hidden in plain sight.
