Jordan Reed invited his co-worker Amanda Schany to be our program. She is the Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Spencer Hospital. The hospital is moving forward with adding a PET/CT Scan to their modality arsenal. The amount of patients they see in oncology has doubled in the last couple of years. The number one use for a PET/CT is for oncology care. This will be a huge asset for our community and regionally.

We didn’t have a program today and that worked out great. The whole meeting was everyone talking about good experiences especially John Cotton after his feature on KCAU 9 with Tim Seaman!

Rotarian Dr. Dan Jorgensen provided our program today. He has been going with a group of fellow surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists and other volunteers to repair kids cleft pallets in Guatemala. He has done this mission work through a Rotary group in the county since 2011. They see between 50-70 patients every trip. He also performs tonsillectomy’s and puts ear tubes in and will often follow up on his patients the next trip. Dan is also on the Occassion’s board and is selling raffle tickets for a Henry Lever Action riffle with a wooden stock and flag design as a fundraiser. One ticket for $10 or six for $50. You can buy them at Axaholics and Spencer Bowl.

Rotarian Rebecca Peters serves on the Okoboji Historical Society so she invited her friend, Jonathan Reed, the President to give us a history lesson on the Franklin Floete Okoboji Mansion- the Grandest residence in the lakes region of its time. Floete bought land on the West side of West Lake Okoboji in Miller’s Bay in 1913. The ornate building was finished in 1918, with than 20 rooms and had every amenity. Unfortunately, Mr. Floete died 4 years later and his wife barely stepped foot in it choosing to live in St. Paul instead. In 1946 in became the exclusive Okoboji Club. Tragically in 1951 it was destroyed by fire. Three years later, the Presbyterians bought the land for a bible camp and that’s what’s still there today.

Kristi Busse invited Paul Daniels and Jim Montgomery with Nonprofit conservation group Pheasants Forever Chapter 42 to be our program today. Kristi was the 1st woman to join the board in their history, which we love. Jim was a founding member of this Iowa Chapter in 1984. All the money they raise through fundraisers, they decide where it goes. They recently donated $100,000 to the Oneota Environmental Learning Center. They also do prescribed burns.

Bob Rose asked fellow Rotarian Steve Bomgaars to give us a history lesson on our city’s namesake George E. Spencer. He was born in Champion, NY and made his way to Iowa in the 1850s to make his “fortune”. He bought 30 acres of property in the undeveloped Clay County which is now Oneota and DeWolf Parks and set up a post office. It was called Spencer Grove at that time until 1868. Mr Spencer sold that land pretty quickly and never stepped foot in Spencer again. At the time he was more interested in getting businesses going on Spirit Lake (build a sawmill and the 1st house there) -this was shortly after the massacre there. Our town was incorporated in 1871. George Spencer went on to become Civil War General and a US Senator from Alabama. He died at the age of 56 in DC. It’s all very fascinating!! Thanks Mr. Bomgaars.
