The roots of The Third Turn Society start in the mid ‘70’s when many of the current members began shooting in Turn Three. In May, 2009, John Mahoney came up with the name of our group - “The Third Turn Society”. Many reasons...the light is good all day…no inside fence…away from the hustle bustle of the garage and pits...good parking...a family turn…our own port-a-john…tram access…just to name a few things. For some of our group, the only racing they shoot, or attend, is at IMS. Many others shoot races every weekend throughout the racing season for various tracks, newspapers and magazines. Most of these shooters follow the USAC Silver Crown, Midget, & Sprint Car circuits, along with local dirt and paved tracks in their areas that feature open-wheel race cars. A few are also contracted to shoot Indy Car and NASCAR events. The Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers Club is well represented by members of The Third Turn Society. Of the 29 active shooters, 17 are members and 6 others have already “qualified” for membership. Member Andy Clark put some interesting statistics together on The Third Turn Society:
- 969 years of experience total at the end of 2012.
- 25 years of experience on average (24.846 for the math-centric members…)
- 74% of the members are eligible if not already members of the Old-Timers Club (74.359 – for the perfectionists)
- That number jumps to 82% in the next 3 years as additional members “come of age”…
- 5 members have 40 plus years of experience; Mikey Young, John Mahoney, Jimmy Dawson, Jimmy Davidson, Rick Lane
- Those 5 account for 211 of the 969 years
- Put back to back, their years of experience would go back to 1802, this pre-dates the internal combustion engine automobile by 63 years (citing Carl Benz patent of 1885).
- If all active members participate this year, the group will surpass the millennium mark in terms of years of experience in 2013…(1002 years)
Nos venit, Nos visium, Nos offa per amicitia. It means: "We came, we saw, we shot with friends". Another interpretation may be: "We came, we saw, we shot at each other". The 2010 "What Were You Looking At?" award winner (or Loser) is a 5 way tie. Duane Appleget
