Stationmaster's House Museum Aquires Unique Exhibit

Photo of coat made of skunk skins about 1918-1919 by Tom and Walter Jones for their sister, Blanche Jones Berlin Taber.

While growing up and living on Palo Duro Creek, brothers Tom and Doc Jones were not only avid gamesman, but also generous brothers.

Recently the Stationmaster's House Museum acquired a skunk coat the two made for their sister Blanche, and soon to be on display in the Grace and Grit Room. (photos forthcoming)

Blanche (Taylor) was the Post Mistress in Gruver for 40 years
Gwenfred (Lackey)was a prolific artist who has a very large painting of The Battle of Adobe Walls hanging in Hansford County Library

The museum board is unsure what sister Gwenfred was gifted with.

Vintage skunk coats gained popularity from the 1900s through the 1940s, prized for their durability, long, glossy hair, and affordability compared to luxury furs like mink. Often marketed under disguised names like "Black Marten" or "Sable-dyed Skunk," they became a staple of practical luxury,

The US Department of Agriculture stated in 1923 that skunk fur was "intrinsically of high value" and a major component of the fur industry, with many rural families selling to large buyers like Sears, Roebuck. The pelts were often used for fur-trimmed cloth coats before being used for full fur garments.

**This skunk coat has no fragrance
