Whether you realize it or not, you’re in a relationship—with your community. And if you weren’t aware of it, chances are, it’s not a healthy one.
Communities today don’t give us the same sense of pride, belonging, and connection they once did. Our grandparents had relationships with their towns that were far more fulfilling. Their cities were vibrant, beautiful, and full of opportunities—places where you could build a life, stay close to home, and be part of something bigger than yourself.
But over time, we’ve replaced those lovable towns with strip malls and sprawling suburbs, trading quality and charm for cheap and disposable. The result? Many cities today aren’t good partners. They don’t invest in themselves, they don’t foster community, and they don’t give residents much to love.
If your city isn’t holding up its end of the bargain, you have three choices:
1. Stay and Settle
You can adapt to the rundown conditions and lower your standards to match your surroundings. Over time, your city won’t change—you will.
2. Leave for Greener Pastures
You can move on to a place that deserves your care and attention, a place that values its residents and gives back in return.
3. Stay and Fight
This is the hardest choice, but also the most meaningful. Instead of adjusting to a city’s shortcomings, fight to lift its standards. Find others who care as much as you do—because they’re out there—and work together to rebuild your city’s identity and spirit.
Our cities don’t have to stay stuck in bad relationships with their residents. With effort, passion, and a collective vision, we can turn them into places we’re proud to call home. Because when our cities thrive, so do we.
