A photo our author took at dawn on June 25, 2003 looking at the Little Bighorn River from near Reno-Benteen hill. A heavy mist hides the river and surrounding area from view. The same was true on June 25, 1876 when Custer did not see all our horses and village before he attacked. The Creator told us through Sitting Bull's vision that the soldiers would die because they had no ears for us. So the Creator helped us via the weather into having him expose himself to us by underestimating our size. It fulfilled Sitting Bull's vision and gave our people a victory. An entire chapter in our book is devoted to this battle. It can be found here https://reelcontact.com/collections/books/products/crazy-horse-the-lakota-warriors-life-and-legacy

The Stronghold area was one of our favorite places to set up camp and hunt buffalo. This picture illustrates why it was called the Stronghold. The long line of buttes gave us fortified cover and allowed us to see the enemy a long ways out before they saw us. It is about 30-40 miles south of Slim Buttes near Reva.

Old Man Crazy Horse's wives had an older brother named Bullhead. He went on a Hemblecha (visionquest) near Deer Medicine Rock in Montana. His vision was not good for his people so he asked the Creator to take him instead of his people. The Creator then took him to the other side. In 1902 a young local artist named E. W. Gollings drew his grave which exists on a hillside overlooking Deer Medicine Rock. A wind storm later blew a tree onto the grave and scattered the rocks. Image courtesy of Jack Bailey family.

Statue of Touch the Cloud located on the University of Central Oklahoma campus in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was Crazy Horse's first cousin, Touch the Cloud, was with Crazy Horse at the end. He helped carry him into the adjutant's office with Hump 2 and Spotted Eagle to die in peace after he was stabbed at Fort Robinson. He also carried him out in a buffalo robe over his shoulder in a night ceremony right under the noses of the guards while the elders smudged a deer, cut up to resemble Crazy Horse's body wrapped in a heavy buffalo robe to fool the soldiers into thinking it was his body. Their mistake was they granted us a short time to mourn in private. We took the body away in a wagon. The Indian police tried to follow us. So we took two wagons and drove one into the creek to leave no tracks. Our grandparents were worried about those who came through our lands in wagons that the outer steel covering on their wheels would permanently scar the earth. Those in the wagons never took us seriously. This is a fairly recent picture of the ruts left by the wagons on the Oregon Trail. It is now an Historic National Park site three miles south of Guernsey, Wyoming. We believe that Mother Earth does not belong to us. We believe that we belong to Mother Earth. Our grandparents were wise and saw these truths. Our oral history is in our book "Crazy Horse, the Lakota Warrior's Life and Legacy". ON FAR LEFT is one of Crazy Horse's maternal uncles, Lone Horn. Also pictured from L-R are Pipe, Grass, and Young Elk. The photo was taken at the Fort Laramie Treaty talks in 1868. The resulting treaty agreed upon stipulated that in order to amend it, it would take approval of 2/3 of the Lakota males. It also stipulated that the Black Hills belonged to the Lakota. In 1876 the US government passed the Appropriations Bill of 1876 effectively demanding the Black Hills be ceded by the Lakota to the US or their food supply would be cut off on the reservations. The Black Hills is where our relatives are buried. When we would not cede them, the United States took unilateral control of the Black Hills through the Black Hills Act of 1877. The provision of a getting 2/3 Lakota male majority to agree was never triggered. In 1980 the Supreme Court ruled by an 8-1 margin that the Black Hills had been taken illegally from the Lakota. A bill was unilaterally enacted to pay our people $102 million for the Black Hills. Our people rejected the offer. This and other stories of Crazy Horse, Lone Horn, and our relatives are available in our book "Crazy Horse the Lakota Warrior's Life and Legacy" found at: https://reelcontact.com/collections/books/products/crazy-horse-the-lakota-warriors-life-and-legacy-paperback

A colorized photo of Mary Traversie Dupree Talks (far right). She was one of our grandmothers and was sent to Hampton College in Hampton, Virginia as a young girl. When she came back to the Rez they made her a school teacher. She ended up running the whole school at age 17. We are not sure who the women to her right are but the little girl is Amy Talks Clown, who married Crazy Horse's nephew Edward. She raised Floyd Clown and was grandmother to Doug War Eagle and Don Red Thunder. She was also an interpreter for the government at the Cheyenne River Rez. Through her service as an interpreter, she was able to keep the Agency from finding out how we were related to Crazy Horse as there was still a lot of anger towards him and his family even after all those years. One of Crazy Horse's brothers Makah (Peter Wolf - his Agency name) was murdered a year after this photo when in anger he admitted being Crazy Horse's brother over the Agency's policy of selling cattle intended for our tribe to local ranchers. The photo was taken around 1917. More information is available in our book at this link: https://reelcontact.com/collections/books/products/crazy-horse-the-lakota-warriors-life-and-legacy

OUR GRANDFATHERS CAMPED AT DEER MEDICINE ROCK prior to the Battle of the Little Bighorn for 6 days. It is carved on the rock itself. The circle denotes a full day. The line through the circle indicates the day and the night. The six lines extending from the circle tells us that they were there six days and six nights. This photo was taken in 2005. Unfortunately pieces of the rock have fallen off and crumbled including sitting Bull's vision. This is no longer there so this photo will have to do. Wopila! Our story is in our book "Crazy Horse the Lakota Warrior's Lief and Legacy" found at this link: https://reelcontact.com/collections/books/products/crazy-horse-the-lakota-warriors-life-and-legacy-paperback
