June 14: Flag Day.

Let’s remember what our nation’s flag stands for: freedom, sacrifice, unity, and the men and women who have defended it. May we always give it the honor and respect it deserves.

From the National American Legion Auxiliary.

Removing barriers for membership:

June 3rd the NEC voted on a change to Standing Rule XI. Units:

Section 6. Membership eligibility through the service of a living veteran may be established by presentation of a current The American Legion membership card. Membership eligibility through the service of a deceased veteran may be established by certification of the deceased veteran’s proof of military service by the post adjutant or other post officer or by the unit secretary or other unit officer. Joining online requires an affidavit of eligibility; the Unit may request a copy of the veteran’s proof of military service.

What does this change mean? The unit secretary or other unit officer may verify the eligibility of a potential member and sign the application. By expanding the options for who may review and sign membership applications, we are removing barriers and allowing the processing of membership to be more efficient. It is not a requirement that the unit review eligibility, if a unit wishes to continue to work with their legion post, they may do so.

Our Auxiliary Unit had the honor of hosting the reception for today’s Heartfelt Quilts of Valor presentation. Seven deserving veterans were wrapped in quilts made with love, gratitude, and respect in recognition of their service and sacrifice to our nation.

We were especially proud to honor one of our own members, Penny Brown, a Vietnam-era Navy nurse, along with two dedicated Legionnaires from Post 164, Post Chaplain Leo Nelson and George King. Four additional community veterans, nominated by friends and family, were also recognized during this meaningful ceremony.

Thank you to the Quilts of Valor volunteers whose time, talent, and dedication help ensure our veterans know they are appreciated and never forgotten. It was a truly special day of honor, gratitude, and patriotism. 🇺🇸❤️💙

D-Day Remembrance 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

On that historic day, thousands of Allied troops faced overwhelming odds as they fought to liberate Europe from tyranny. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to freedom changed the course of history and secured the liberties we cherish today.

Many never returned home. Others carried the physical and emotional scars of war for the rest of their lives. All answered the call of duty when their nation and the world needed them most.

As Blue Star Mothers, we understand the sacrifices made not only by those who serve, but also by the families who love and support them. Today, we honor the heroes of D-Day and remember the generations of service members who have followed in their footsteps.

May we never forget the courage displayed on the shores of Normandy, the sacrifices made for freedom, and the legacy left by the Greatest Generation.

We remember.
We honor.
We are forever grateful.

Memorial Day poppies are a powerful symbol of remembrance for the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Inspired by the fields of red poppies that grew across the battlefields of World War I, the poppy reminds us that freedom is not free. Wearing or displaying a poppy honors the sacrifices of our fallen heroes, keeps their memory alive, and reminds future generations of the cost of liberty and the importance of never forgetting those who served. Thank you to the volunteers from our unit and Legionnaires from the Spearfish Post #164. We are proud of our Little Miss Poppy, Addy Klunder. ; ; ; ;

On Saturday morning, our unit had a very busy meeting! We adopted the tentative calendar of events and activities for 2026-2027; planned Memorial Day week and poppy distribution; support for a local Veteran’s family and 15 homeless Veterans; and installed our 2026-2027 unit officers!
Thanks to Julie Malcolm, we have one picture to share! Congratulations to our new officers - Historian Laura Turner (behind the post in the picture) and our assistant secretaries Sue Shepherd and Nancy Burriss. Our Secretary will have her baby in July. We planned a team support to get the job done! Thank you to all who are returning to serve our unit again! “For God and Country; Service, not Self” ;
