At the second annual 2.2-mile Walk for Heroes, BE THE ONE, veterans, active duty servicemen, and community members, walked to raise awareness, remember those lost to su***de, and stand beside those who are struggling. Each name, each memory, and each light reminded us of a life that mattered and someone deeply missed. By listening, reaching out, and caring for one another, we can bring hope and remind others they do not have to face their struggles alone.

Thank you to Connie Wagner and Annette Johnson who volunteered at the registration table. We also had the participation of Hannah, 2026 Girls State delegate, and Connor, 2026 Boys State delegate. Thank you to the students of the BHSU Yellow Jacket Veterans Club who helped and secured many details for the success of the event. Thank you to the sponsors and Black Hills State University.

Members of the Spearfish American Legion Family Post 164 enjoyed hearing from our 2026 Youth Trooper Cadet, Girls State, and Boys State delegates as they shared their experiences.

A common theme emerged: learning to understand different points of view, listen respectfully, and remain civil when we disagree. Their reflections reminded us that our differences do not have to divide us, offering an encouraging contrast to the division so often depicted in the news.

Relationships, camaraderie, and lasting friendships were at the heart of each experience. One especially meaningful takeaway was the importance of getting involved in local government and helping shape their communities.

The delegates shared how these programs changed them, strengthened their leadership skills, and broadened their perspectives. We are proud to support opportunities that help our young people become engaged citizens and tomorrow’s leaders! ;

Save the Date!
Our second annual 2.2-Mile Walk for Heroes is set!
This year, we are making the event even more meaningful. We will gather at the BHSU Lyle Young Track & Field, where participants will have an opportunity to prepare and decorate luminaries in memory of family members, friends, comrades, and others who died by su***de or who have struggled with su***de.

Everyone is welcome to come, remember a loved one or someone they knew, and help shine a light on su***de awareness and prevention.
The Veterans, active-duty military, students, families, and community members are invited to join us for this special Walk of Remembrance and Awareness.

🇺🇸 Proud Moments for Spearfish Unit 164! 🇺🇸

During the District One Fall Meeting, our Unit was honored to receive the plaque for the Dorothy Pearl Most Outstanding Unit Americanism Program in the Northwestern Division!
A special thank you and congratulations to Amber Lawlar, Unit Americanism Chairman, for her innovative, patriotic, and dynamic ideas. Her dedication to Americanism and our community continues to make a difference! 🇺🇸
Congratulations also to Micheline Nelson, Department Legislative Chairman, who received the Best Department Legislative Program Citation for the Northwestern Division, representing South Dakota! Her legislative business card was also featured during the National Convention. What a wonderful recognition of her hard work and dedication!
Another proud moment for Spearfish Unit 164 was seeing the Unit featured on the big screen five different times during five different programs at the National Convention! Those photos are a testament to the members actively carrying out the American Legion Auxiliary mission and embracing the Four Pillars of The American Legion.

These recognitions belong to the many dedicated members who give their time, talents, and hearts in service to our veterans, military families, youth, and community.
