๐Ÿ Happy Fisheries Friday! ๐ŸŸ

To celebrate America turning 250 years old and D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery turning 130 years old, the hatchery has created a coin to commemorate the occasion!

Through this coin, we celebrate and reflect on the history of America, and the fisheries work done by its citizens at the D.C. Booth National Fish Hatchery over the many decades. The coin is available for sale at the hatchery nature store, and we added one of the coins to the National Fish and Aquatic Conservation Archives on site to be preserved for the future generations of this nation.

Happy Birthday America and huzzah to the workers of the D.C. Booth National Fish Hatchery! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŸ

Today marks our 130th anniversary! On June 10, 1896, Congress authorized the establishment of the Spearfish Fish Cultural Station. 130 years later we still propagate and stock fish, plus we also house our agencies fisheries archives and receive 200,000 annual visitors!

Purely by coincidence, a special birthday gift we received today was the Tip of the Spear award from Visit Spearfish for the hatcheries role in tourism in Spearfish. Generations of hatchery staff, Booth Society staff and volunteers have contributed to welcoming visitors to the hatchery since 1896. We look forward to continuing to offer educational outreach and activities to our visitors for many years to come and appreciate the recognition and support from our community.

With a lot of hard work and lots of help from our volunteers, we moved some very large fish from Pond 4 to Raceway 1. Today the fish got loaded into the truck and will be stocked on the Crow Reservation in Montana. Itโ€™s been a great couple of days. Thank you to all who helped with this big job!

Last Saturday was , but weโ€™re still celebrating! Did you know Brown Trout migrate during spawning season? On average they move 168 yards, though some have been known to swim over a mile!

To celebrate, check out this rocking blues fish anthem that raises awareness about fish migration and the importance of free-flowing rivers. Itโ€™s funky, fun, and guaranteed to get โ€œIโ€™m a Fish!โ€ stuck in your head all day long.๐ŸŸ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŒŠ
