Most kids walk into the store with their parents and they get to the toy aisle and their eyes light up. Dolls, trucks, games, and stuffed animals, and even if they do not leave with a toy every time, they still experience something powerful: the security of being loved, cared for, and seen. But many children in foster care may never experience that moment.
Some have never had the freedom to choose something for themselves. Some have never owned anything brand new that was truly theirs. Many have spent their lives moving from place to place, carrying loss and instability that no child should ever have to carry. That is the āwhyā behind the toy room.
We did not want children to simply receive necessities, we want them to experience wonder, joy, and the feeling of being deeply seen. At the end of every visit, each child gets to walk into a room filled with brand-new toys and hear words that may be life-changing: āPick out two toys just for you.ā Not borrowed. Not temporary. Theirs.
There is something holy about watching a childās eyes light up when they realize they are allowed to choose. In that moment, walls come down, smiles appear, and for a little while, they are not defined by trauma or hardship. They simply get to be children. The toy room reflects the heart of God, a Father who not only meets needs, but delights in His children. God sees the overlooked, comforts the hurting, and gives good gifts as a reminder of His love. Through something as simple as a toy, a child is reminded: you matter, you are loved, and you have not been forgotten. ā¤ļø
