Spartanburg Lions Club

Spartanburg Lions Club The Spartanburg Lions Club meets every 1st and 3rd Monday at 12 Noon at the Mary Black Foundation in Spartanburg. We also support Lions Vision Services (LVS).

As part of Lions Clubs International, Spartanburg Lions Club unites service around 5 areas of need. Since our founding in 1917 all Lions Clubs have united in sight conservation. Spartanburg Lions Sight Services provides eye examinations and eye glasses for the underserved in Spartanburg County at no charge. Our other Global Causes are Diabetes, Hunger, Environment, and Childhood Cancer. One of the

major community service projects for the Spartanburg Lions Club is helping to meet needs at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind (SCSDB). Each year we provide a Christmas experience for the students of SCSDB by purchasing a Christmas gift for each student and hosting a Christmas party for them. Our Lions always look forward to the annual Holiday luncheon hosted by the school where we mingle with some of its students and they provide delightful entertainment. Spartanburg Lions Club also funds several college scholarships. We currently sponsor a Leo Club at Dorman High School to encourage students to participate in community service. Deserving college-bound Leos can apply for our scholarships. Spartanburg Community College also can award a scholarship funded by the Spartanburg Lions Club Foundation to a student with sight challenges. State-wide, Lions Clubs support groundbreaking research at The Storm Eye Institute at The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina. LVS provides eye surgeries, low vision equipment, health screenings, and hearing aids to low income families. They can be reached at ww.lionsvisionservices.org

Spartanburg Lions Club supports Leader Dogs for the Blind!

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes to make a Leader Dog client’s time on campus as smooth and stress-free as possible?

On this week’s episode of Taking the Lead, we sit down with Andy Hernandez, our client experience supervisor, to talk about the thoughtful details that help clients feel comfortable, supported, and ready to focus on learning.

From coordinating schedules across teams to creating meaningful moments of connection (yes—there’s even wine & cheese night), Andy and her team play a vital role in every client’s journey.

Listen now to hear how we’re creating a more personalized, welcoming experience—every step of the way: https://takingthelead.transistor.fm/episodes/we-got-you

If you would like to become a Lion and serve as part of the largest service organization in the world, then please contact us as all are welcome!
Our club is happy to welcome Sheriff Bill Rhyne as our guest speaker at our lunch meeting on Monday, February 9th. Lunch is served at 11:30 am in the meeting room downstairs at the Mary Black Foundation, 349 E. Main St., Spartanburg.

Sheriff Bill Rhyne was born and raised in northern Spartanburg County and is a proud graduate of Chapman High School. Deeply rooted in this community, he credits it with shaping his values, purpose, and commitment to service. After high school, he answered the call to serve by joining the United States Marine Corps, where he learned lessons of discipline, loyalty, and honor that would guide him throughout his life and career.

Upon returning home, Sheriff Rhyne began his law enforcement career with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, serving more than four years—primarily as a Resident Deputy focused on community-oriented policing. It was during this time that he witnessed firsthand how compassionate, consistent law enforcement can strengthen communities and build lasting trust between officers and residents.

He later joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol, where he served throughout the Upstate in a variety of roles. From the ACE Team motorcycle unit to his time as Public Information and Community Relations Officer across five counties, his approach to policing was always grounded in visibility, transparency, and connection. Over the course of his career, he rose through the ranks and retired as a Lieutenant and Executive Commander, overseeing Community Relations, Recruiting, Public Information, the Department of Education, and Freedom of Information.

Following retirement, Sheriff Rhyne served as Director of Training for American Services before returning to the Highway Patrol as Community Outreach Coordinator after a change in state law allowed it. Throughout his decades of service, he has remained steadfast in his belief that when law enforcement listens, engages, and works hand-in-hand with the community, real progress is possible.
