Transcript:

"Hello everyone! My name is Anita Steichen-McDaniel, Executive Director, at the SC Association for the Deaf.

We have great news! The Sign Language Interpreters Act Bill H.3795 passed! It is now Act number R206. It was signed by the SC Governor late yesterday May 16, 2022.

What does this mean? For sign language interpreters to have recognized certification. 'Recognized certification' means a certification in sign language interpretation as approved by the South Carolina Association of the Deaf, the South Carolina Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

This act takes effect on January 1, 2024.

The SCAD, SC RID (Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf), volunteer taskforce, and stakeholders have worked many, many years on this. We want to thank all of them who have worked on this. We want to thank those who traveled to meet with the legislators at the SC State House in Columbia. We want to thank all the House Representatives and Senators who passed this bill.

Thank you for watching!"
