Lake Mohawk Marine Safety Services 973-729-0813

Lake Mohawk Marine Safety Services 973-729-0813 Public Safety There are 10 Marine Safety Officers that make up the LMCC Marine Patrol. The Marine Patrol is on the water from May thru September.

HISTORY AND ESTABLISHMENT OF THE LAKE MOHAWK MARINE PATROL

Prior to 1979, the New Jersey State Marine Police patrolled the waters of the state. These sworn officers were a mix of regular full time police officer and seasonal part time officers. Lake Mohawk had a contingent patrolling here. Some of these officers were even residents of Lake Mohawk like Eric Housechild. In September of 1979, New Je

rsey consolidated several state agencies into the New Jersey State Police. Among these were the Marine Police, Capital Police and Highway Patrol. During this consolidation, some of the seasonal and part time officer positions were eliminated. The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau was formed with full time State Troopers and the regular full time Marine Police Officers. Their main mission at this time was enforcement of boating regulations. Since Lake Mohawk lost their Marine Police contingent, the club formed its own Marine Patrol. This was patterned after the former NJ State Marine Police. Several members of Lake Mohawk who had previous Marine Police backgrounds were chosen for the Marine Patrol. Their uniforms, procedures and priorities remained basically the same. In 2000, the Marine Patrol had an influx of new members. Their mission changed from strict enforcement to a more safety conscious aspect. The new members of the Marine Patrol changed their image over the next few years to reflect their new goals and mission. To provide safety and security to our boating members. With subtle changes in uniform going from a standard police uniform to polo shirts and ball caps, they became more approachable than feared. The title of Marine Patrolman changed to Marine Safety Officer. Employment and training standards were established. All Marine Safety Officers (MSO) are LMCC members and residents. All MSOs undergo training and certification in Basic Water Rescue, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen Administration, Bloodborne Pathogens, Incident Command, HAZMAT, Fire Emergencies, Towing, Small Boat Handling, and accident investigation. They do most of this training during the off season and on their own time. Since 2013, the Marine Patrol and the Waterfront Lifeguards were placed under the newly formed Marine Services by the club. Communications were a problem for the Marine Patrol. This was finally fixed with a common radio system for the Marine Patrol and the Lifeguards. Each beach Lifeguard station has direct radio contact with the Marine Patrol on duty. This has enhanced our safety on the lake and decreased response time to emergencies. Lifeguards are taught to not only watch their water, but beyond. They report capsizes, open water swimmers and distressed boaters directly to the Marine Patrol on duty and pinpoint the location. The Lifeguards also train with the Marine Patrol for deep water emergencies such as a boating accident or back injury from a water skiing or tubing spill. The Marine Patrol also established a dedicated telephone number to contact them. This phone number is usually answered 24 hrs per day during the season. If a call is missed, it texts the message to the MSO on duty. The Marine Patrol stresses safety and education. They have partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to promote Boating Safety classes and free Vessel Safety Checks. They enjoy a good working relationship with the Sparta Police and EMS Departments and the NJ State Police Marine Bureau in Lake Hopatcong.

LMCC MARINE RULES & REGULATIONS UPDATED
The LMCC Marine Rules & Regulations were updated by the Marine Services Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees. We'll be highlighting some of the significant changes here on our page for our members.
The revised Marine Rules & Regulations were highlighted in the last issue of the Papoose. All boaters are responsible to adhere to our club rules for safety of all using our lakes.
The NJ State Boat Regulation Commission has approved the use of either the orange triangular ski pennant or the orange rectangular ski flag to be displayed whenever towing skiers, tubers or anything else behind your boat. This is now reflected in our regulations.
New also this year is that LMCC restricts to only two towable skiers or tubers behind boats.

BOATING WATER SAFETY CHECKLIST

Boating is a fun way to spend time on the water, but safety should always come first! This checklist will help you prepare and stay secure while on the boat, and help you be ready to handle emergencies.

BEFORE YOU BOARD
Weather Check: Review the latest weather conditions and forecasts. If you have a handheld marine radio, our local weather is on channel WX-6, 24 hrs per day and right out of Andover.
Float Plan: Make sure you tell someone on shore of when and where you expect to go boating, kayaking, sailing, whatever. Let them know when you expect to be out and back. Many times, our Marine Patrol will get calls from worried family of some paddleboarders or sailors out with an impending storm.
Safety Gear: Make sure that everyone on board has a properly fitted USCG approved lifejacket. Anyone under the age of 13 must wear a lifejacket at all times when the boat is underway.
Communication Devices: Although Marine Radios are good to have, not really needed on our lake. But you may want to make sure that your cell phone is charged. Keep the Marine Safety Services number handy. Check your horn or whistle on the boat.
Safety Briefing: Along communication stuff, give a safety briefing to your passengers on where lifejackets, fire extinguishers and first aid kit are. Everyone wants to help, but if your passengers haven’t been on your boat before, let them know to relax, keep their hands, arms and legs inside til the ride comes to a complete stop. No jumping in or out of the boat when you’re docking. We’ve had some injuries, ie. Hip and arm fractures from good intentioned passengers.
First Aid kits and Fire Extinguisher: Check to make sure that your first aid kit is up to date and may have to resupply it with fresh items. Make sure your fire extinguisher is fully charged in the green.
Training: Make sure that anyone, including the skipper, is certified to operate the boat.

ON THE BOAT
Lifejackets: Not only children under 13 yrs old required to wear lifejackets, but you should consider providing a comfortable PFD for passengers with limited mobility or non swimmers.
Nav Rules: Adhere to the navigation rules, especially pertaining to speed and safe distances from others such as those being towed, fishing boats, swimmers, no wake zones.
Lookout: The number 2 cause of most boating accidents is not maintaining a proper lookout. Maybe give one of your passengers this job to keep a lookout. Maintain situational awareness (pretty much, knowing what’s going on around you.)

LMCC's WATER SAFETY TEAM READY FOR THE SEASON.
Our Water Safety Team comprised of our Waterfront Lifeguards, Pool Guards, Lifeguard Supervisors and Marine Safety Officers have been very busy getting ready for the upcoming season. Every Waterfront and Pool Lifeguard along with new applicants re certified in their water rescue, CPR/AED, first aid and oxygen administration skills.
The guards braved the 61 degree water temp last weekend to complete their water rescue skills. This week, they all completed their annual CPR/AED and first aid training in the blistering heat.
Lifeguard equipment and chairs have been deployed to the beaches. The Marine Safety Services along with some senior Lifeguards pulled out some beach swim docks and set up the swim lines.
Marine Safety Officers deployed the navigational buoys around the lake and also staffed the ramp during the first week of the much anticipated opening.
All beaches will be open and staffed on Memorial Day weekend except for Sleepy, Tamarack, Toboggan, and Manitou. The following beaches will be staffed every weekend until June 20th: Beaches 4, 6, Happy Valley, Upper Lake, and Alpine. From June 20th to August 30th, beaches will be staffed daily from 12 to 6 PM, with the exception that Beach 1 will be staffed 1 PM - 5 PM and Beach 3 will be staffed Thursday-Sunday. Tamarack and Sleepy Lagoon will be staffed on weekends and holidays as needed.
Club issued wristbands for 2026 are required for access to all beaches and docks. Our members can easily be identified by the Lifeguards, staff and beach officers. Using the wristbands eliminates the need for frequent tag checks. If Lifeguards cannot see your wristband, they will have to clear the water and conduct wristband checks. Those who do not have a wristband must have their valid 2026 club card. No card or wristband, no access to beaches. Guests aged 5 yrs of age and above must have a Guest Wristband. Extra Guest wristbands can be purchased at the club office or at the Boardwalk Club whenever the office is closed.
Now, we hope this weekend weather will cooperate! Enjoy.

Not all Lifejackets and Personal Flotation Devices are approved and certified. We are seeing unapproved, foreign and counterfeit lifejackets and PFDs in stores and online. Please make sure that you check the inside label on any lifejacket or personal flotation device for the U.S. Coast Guard approval number. This is especially important when purchasing for children. Those "puddle jumper" life vests may not be approved. Infant and child PFDs should be able to turn a child face up if needed.
Please be aware.
