April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and tomorrow is Denim Day. Wear jeans tomorrow!!
The history of Denim Day traces back to a 1990s court case in Italy that sparked global outrage. In 1998, the Italian Supreme Court r**e case 1998 overturned a r**e conviction, arguing that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped remove them—implying consent. This reasoning led to widespread protests, including women in the Italian Parliament wearing jeans in solidarity with the survivor. In response, the organization Peace Over Violence launched Denim Day in 1999 in the United States as a way to challenge victim-blaming and raise awareness about sexual violence. Since then, it has grown into an international movement observed during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, encouraging people to wear denim as a visible statement of support for survivors and to promote education around consent and respect.
