LBC '26 enjoyed their final full-day retreat this month at Maryland Public Television, sponsored by Prescott HR, United Way of Central Maryland, and Community Assistance Network. They reflected on everything they learned during the LBC program, revisited what community leadership really means, and made plans for how they intend to effect change in our community.
Key messages from the day included:
-> You don't need to have a lot of money to make a difference. Give what you can and give consistently as best you can.
-> If you are giving $10,000 per year, you and the organizations you support may benefit from setting up a donor advised fund (DAF)..
-> Philanthropy is like dating; you can start small and see how it goes. If you like what you see, then consider a bigger commitment.
-> There are more than 650 government boards and commissions at the state level, and about 60 at the county level. There is something for everyone who wants to get involved in government.
-> Don't serve on a board like you are serving time. Really engage.
-> Many important leadership lessons come through board service, where hard decisions are made and diverse opinions are taken into account.
The cohort enjoyed a meaningful day of activities, including:
-> Engaging with a panel of leaders immersed in various aspects of community leadership.
-> Writing their own obituary, defining the legacy they want to leave, and how they might shift their current community work to make that happen.
-> Modeling a challenging community leadership scenario, such as a board faced with a drastic cut in funding, and then presenting the scenario in a skit on camera.
-> Writing their personal philanthropy and community leadership plan.
Special thanks to Kimberly Prescott, LBC '25, Prescott HR, who helped plan and facilitate the retreat.
