The Tenement Museum of New York is proud to organize CHALK—honoring the immigrant workers who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Each year on the anniversary of the blaze, volunteers fan out across the city to inscribe the name and age of each Triangle worker in front of their former home.
On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out at the Triangle Waist Company, located one block east of Washington Square Park. The public watched in horror as 146 young workers—most of them immigrant women and girls—burned or jumped to their deaths. There was a trial, but the factory owners, long known for their anti-union stance, were acquitted. In the wake of the fire, workers, reformers, and city and state politicians came together to form the Factory Investigating Commission (FIC), which ultimately passed dozens of
laws about workplace safety, minimum wages, and maximum hours. Frances Perkins, a key player in the FIC, later called the Triangle Fire the “day the New Deal was born,” for how it sparked an awakening of social responsibility.

In Chicopee, Mass., home of IUE-CWA Local 81206, students, members, and allies rallied in opposition to the closures. Local 81206 President Lance Green spoke to MassLive about the cuts, saying, “It’s my belief that it’s purposeful, designed to hurt working men and women and the working poor.” He added, “This attack is meant to disrupt and disenfranchise the next generation of union workers.

Earlier this month, CWA members in Massachusetts took to the streets in outrage over President Trump’s plan to end the Job Corps program, the nation’s largest residential career training venture.
