Good News! The 1909 Sparks School ruins was placed on the Preliminary Landmarks List by the Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC) last night.

The LPC passes their recommendation on to the County Executive who passes it on to the County Council to draft legislation placing the Sparks School on the Final Landmarks List.

Once it is on the list, Baltimore County (owner) must maintain the ruins as they stand. If the property was sold, the ruins would need to be incorporated into any construction on the site.

I am glad to take questions you may have.

Thanks.

What does the community think about making the remains of the school a County Landmark? What that would mean is that before it could be demolished, there would have to be a public hearing by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Or, alternatively, if something else were to be built there, the remains of the school would need to be incorporated in the design.

Interested in hearing your thoughts! Thanks!

Passed by the old Sparks School today and it was litter free. Would anyone like to help plant a Garden this spring in the front?

I am delighted to say that we can cancel the Saturday Clean Up effort at the Historic Sparks School, as it has been done. I have not received confirmation yet as to who, but I believe it was the County. YAY!!! Thanks to all of you for your willingness to help keep our community and historic structures clean. You are the BEST! Special thanks to Fran Burns who brought this to our attention.

This Saturday, January 9th, is the anniversary of the heartbreaking fire that destroyed Sparks School. We are organizing a clean-up effort on this date, at 1:00 p.m. to remove all of the litter and debris that has gathered around the ruins that still stand proud.

If you are interested, please bring some trash bags and whatever else you may need to help give some respect back to this historic site. See you on Saturday!
