It’s local election time again!!! The legislature has messed with the sign up process again and shortened it…imagine that…seems like they are always making it more difficult for the public to engage in the process. Remember that you always knew where you voted and when on every election and you had to show up and show ID? I got off track……

Candidate filing this year is June 2-6th….offices up for election are as follows: Mayor Mendenhall, Kevin Oyler, Shane Marshall.

In my opinion one of the topics for all candidates needs to be the conflict of interest forms that are required to be filled out and maintained and kept current. Who stands to benefit from decisions that are being made.

Let’s hope no one goes unopposed!!

Follow up to Last post on SB277. Mike Mckell is now in Senate Leadership which is great if you have a representative who is pushing legislation that benefits the people and not good when you have a mostly self serving representative. I say mostly because Mike some times does promote and support bills that in the end benefit citizens. On SB 277 you have Mike and the Utah league of cities and towns (another liberal org, in my opinion) in favor of the bill. So again it will now be harder to get transparency on our government and our elected officials.

Hide your wife…hide your kids…hide your pets but especially your wallets! The Mayor and City Council are in Midway for the next 2.5 days deciding what your priorities are and how to spend your money. Throw in the fact the legislature is in session and this is going to be a very expensive month for all of us! Stay tuned and engaged!

On Tuesday Night the Mayor and Council just committed the taxpayer up to another $50 million in debt because the Water reclamation plant (sewer plant) was nearly $50 million more than they estimated. More to follow…..

Just announced tonight. More to follow. Stay tuned for total costs including the ground.

Please fill this survey out. It is important and the city asks some good questions, but also be aware of how the questions are presented because the city uses this survey as a way to justify spending millions and millions of your hard earned dollars without asking you. For example they have a question that is almost at the end of the survey where they ask. "which of the following questions do you agree with the most." 1. I am willing to pay a "little more" for additional and or better quality services from the city. 2 .I'm happy with the current balance of city services and or service quality I receive and the taxes I pay. 3. I can live with reduced services and or service quality if it means I lower fees or taxes.

The last one implies that you would get reduced service and quality if they lowered the fees and taxes and that just isn't completely true without a lot more information and discussion. The city is currently using the responses to a similar question on a prior survey where people said they are willing to "pay a little more" and so they are selling the new rec center project as $4.90 a month, but they leave out that the $4.90 a month is just the bond fee and it will last for 20 years and doesn't include the fact that the project costs are significantly higher than they mentioned and how they are going to pay for the millions in higher costs and how you are going to pay for it with increased fees in other areas and on other services to subsidize those additional costs, and will that reduce your services and or quality of services? So please be careful, and thoughtful when responding to this survey and any survey sent our by the city or any government entity.

The 2023 Spanish Fork Resident Opinion Survey is live.
Please take a few minutes and provide your feedback by December 19: https://www.jotform.com/230026666279157
