Mickey asked me to repost this to the page for those looking for additional service opportunities:
UtahSAG
Amateur (HAM) radio volunteers brought together by our desire to support public service events throughout the state of Utah
utahsag.org
I don't know what's happened, most likely something screwed up with Facebook's latest update push, but I can't post directly to the page anymore. Can you please check my permissions and post the following on the page for me. Thanks
Hello all,
I have gotten the calendar for this year off to a good start. If you are aware of events that I do not have listed that you believe should be, please let me know ASAP. Also, if you are aware of event managers that currently do not make use of HAM radio support let me know who they are and what their contact info is so we can make our presentation.
The calendar is at https://utahsag.org/calendar
Not everything in the calendar has info on how to volunteer yet, this is because I am awaiting verifications from event folks.
Now, For those of you who are unaware of what UtahSAG is and why you get so much email from us.
UtahSAG was incorporated as a 501c3 non-profit corporation a few years back. Our purpose is to provide an umbrella organization for Amateur Radio Operators and Clubs that wish to provide support for community events, public service, emergency service and other community outreach functions. What we offer falls under a few categories:
1) UtahSAG is a volunteer support organization that provides accident/medical overage insurance personal liability overage insurance and vehicle liability/injury/damage overage insurance. Currently we can support 100 volunteers and 50 vehicles on any give event date. This insurance covers you for anything that your personal insurance doesn't cover or undercovers. Remember, event managers do not have this kind of coverage and could leave you in a really bad situation in the event that something happens and you get blamed for it. If you support events and want to know how the coverage would work for you just send me an email.
2) UtahSAG has an email list of over 450 volunteers from all over the state of Utah and into Nevada and Idaho. This means that if you or your club are trying to support an event and you don't have enough volunteers you can send to our list, have me send to our list and post on the UtahSAG Calendar and on the Events Page on the UtahSAG website.
3) You need help getting started as an event support coordinator and don't want to come out the other end bleeding and tattered from all the beating of your head against the wall (hehe). We offer training for event support coordinators on how to work with event management and how to efficiently run a live net. All too often someone who's only had experience running a check in net freezes on a live net when something goes wrong. Knowing what to do and how to handle those situations is your best bet for avoiding the freeze.
4) You know of events that would benefit from having HAM radio support but don't know how to approach the event managers. You can make arrangements with us (yes, there is more than just me) and one or more of us can meet with you and the event folks to talk about what we as HAMs can provide for them.
5) Dry Runs - You want to jump in, but you're just not sure. Sign up for an event and in the comments put down that you want to be an observer so you can see what all goes into running an event.
It really and truly is our desire at UtahSAG to make your experience as a HAM operator and as a HAM Club officer easier when dealing with getting support for events in your purview. Promoting the hobby is one of our top goals.
