Southport Cares is grateful to have recently received a $10,000 donation from Farmers Insurance, coming at a crucial time as we help families in need that have been impacted by recent incidents. This marks their second major contribution to Southport Cares; they previously donated $10,000 at the end of 2024, enabling us to respond swiftly with financial aid after the mass shooting.

At Farmers, their purpose is delivering peace of mind to customers as well as the communities in which their employees live and work. To further their commitment, the Farmers Community Grant Program accepts nominations from employees to support charities in alignment with their corporate citizenship strategy.

As a part of the Farmers Community Grant Program, one of the Farmers employees that resides in Southport and works remotely (William "Ben" Smith) nominated Southport Cares and was able to deliver the $10,000 donation.

We deeply appreciate Farmers for their ongoing support of communities like Southport, helping us fulfill our shared commitment to assist those in need. Special thanks also go to Ben for his unwavering support of Southport Cares and for positively impacting our community!

Southport Cares Mass Shooting – 3 Month Update 12/31/25
We wanted to provide a 3-month financial update, outline next steps and begin to highlight the amazing work done by our community over the last 3 months to raise money for the victims of the mass shooting.

Financial Update (As of 12/31/25)
• Funds raised to date - The community has raised and donated $346,223.35 to Southport Cares to support the victims of the mass shooting. That is an incredible amount!! There are still some fundraising efforts in process, so we are expecting some additional income.
• Funds distributed thus far - Southport Cares has distributed 77% of that money ($265,278.13) to date to the victims, which includes the following 4 groups:
1. Families of the deceased (3 families)
2. Wounded patrons ( 8 )
3. Impacted employees at American Fish and Frying Pan (24)
4. Support efforts for the healing of the survivors group.
• Future Funding – As of right now, the remaining funds are intended to be used as follows (subject to change based on need):
- $55,000 is being held in reserve for ongoing support for those still receiving medical care (including surgeries and rehabilitation) as well as continued support for the families of the deceased. We are in constant contact with these individuals and families to assess their ongoing needs.
- The remaining balance will likely be used to support the survivors’ group, including future meetings and potentially some future efforts to honor those killed and impacted by the shooting.
- We remain committed to distributing 100% of the funds received to the 4 groups (listed above) that have always been identified as the intended recipients of the money raised. We will continue to provide periodic financial updates until all funds have been distributed.
• 100% of the money donated goes to the victims – Just a reminder that the board of Southport Cares pays all banking, PayPal and other associated expenses so that every dollar donated goes 100% to the victims. To date, the board has covered $1,242.66 in PayPal and banking expenses and $155.25 for additional insurance coverages for the fundraising efforts.

The Support of this Community is Amazing
We continue to be inspired by the strength and resolve of those impacted by the tragedy. Each person and family will be scarred forever, and each will find their own timing and their own path to healing. The survivors have come together almost as a second family, connecting and supporting each other, and looking out for one another. The prayers and support from this community have not been lost on them and have been a big part of their healing process. They see that the community has been and will always be there for them as they go through their own paths to recovery.

We felt that this would be a good time to start sharing some of the amazing efforts that have been made by this community over the last 3 months to support the victims and their families. It has not only helped the victims heal, but it has also helped this community heal. Southport is Strong and Southport Does Care!

We have had kids raise funds from selling lemonade to fundraisers that brought in over $100,000. There have been prayer vigils, people selling t-shirts, gooney birds and many other items sold to raise money. Bands have played while people raised funds and honored those lost and those impacted. We have had hundreds of donations come in from all over the country including people from as far away as California and Alaska. We have had donations as small as $5 and as large as $50,000 – but they all matter. The financial contributions are just a symbol of the strength of our community, and how we rally around those impacted. No person in this community goes through a crisis like this alone.

Because we are still waiting on some pictures and donations to come in, we will likely do 2-3 posts to honor those that ran fundraisers as well as companies and organizations that donated. If you donated and think we are leaving you out, just send me an email and we will be sure to include you in an upcoming post. We are not covering individual/personal donations as there are too many to cover and many wanted their donations to be anonymous. Almost 300 thank you letters and tax receipts have been emailed to all those donors that gave us their email, and those that didn’t will be mailed their thank you letters and donation tax receipts next week.

On behalf of the board of Southport Cares and our local first responders, thank you all for what you have done to support our neighbors in need. We are proud and honored to be a part of this community. If you have any questions or concerns, you can always contact me at [email protected]

We wanted to provide an update on our efforts to support the victims of the mass shooting:

1) We had planned to provide a final financial update at the end of November, however, there are still some donations and fundraisers still in progress. Our hope is to provide an update at the end of December.

2) We are in the process of getting donation thank you letters and tax receipts out to all that donated on line and by check, and for those that identified themselves with cash donations. We are a small charity and there have been hundreds of donations so this is taking some time. We plan to complete this by the end of December. In the next few weeks we also plan to highlight all the amazing fundraising efforts done by some incredible people in our community to help raise money for the victims and lift their spirits.

3) Since the shooting, we have directed all donations to support the victim assistance fund for this tragedy, unless otherwise directed. Starting January 1, 2026 we will revert back to our previous default of general donations going to our general fund to support this and all of our other people in need. That said, you can still direct your payments specifically to the mass shooting victim fund by using the option to choose the mass shooting fund on line, or by writing "mass shooting victim fund" in the memo line of the check. Most of the donations received since the shooting have been using these identifiers already, but we just wanted everyone to be aware of the process and the fact that you can still direct funds to the victim assistance fund.

4) We remain in contact with the victims and continue to assess their needs. Several are still receiving medical attention, so please keep them and all those impacted by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers. The victims are all very aware and appreciative of all the support of this amazing community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please write me at [email protected].

Thank you all for your incredible support.

Southport Cares – Mass Shooting Victims Fund – Interim Update November 3, 2025

This update will serve as our first interim update on the efforts of Southport Cares to support those impacted by the mass shooting event of September 27, 2025. There are still fundraisers being held and funds being distributed, so we are not in a position to provide a final report at this time.

Funding and Distribution Update
• As of today, we have taken in $242,237.26 in donations since the mass shooting.
• We have sent out $232,595.82 in checks to support 34 families, wounded patrons and impacted employees. Approximately $5,095 of this total has been used to support the activities and needs of the private survivors group that we have assisted. We were also able to distribute victim support checks in the very early stages before any fundraisers because of reserves we had on hand, thanks to many of our long-time contributors.
• Because the board members of Southport Cares pay all expenses (including banking and PayPal expenses) 100% of funds donated go towards the victims. To be clear, every dollar donated goes 100% to the intended recipients (the victims).
• 100% of the funds donated to this cause have been, and will continue to go to, the following groups:
1 - The families of the deceased
2 - The wounded
3 - The impacted employees
4 - Funding/supporting the healing activities of the private survivors group
• There have been some questions on whether any funds were going to first responders or other first responder causes. The answer is “No” to both. 100% of the funds raised go 100% to the (4) groups listed above.
• Southport Cares has made two payments in the last month to a fire victim on a call we responded to and also made a donation to the Jack Helbig Foundation that helps prevent drownings in our area, and a cause we support annually. Both of those were paid out of existing funds we already had on hand and are part of our ongoing support of our mission. They were not taken out of the funds intended for the victims of the mass shooting.

What To Expect Next
• We plan to have an upcoming post to recognize all the organized fundraisers that were held to support the victims of this tragedy and made donations through Southport Cares.
• We are planning to have a more final report once we close out some of the fundraisers and any additional support checks in the next few weeks. We are thinking this report will come towards the end of November.

Overall Thoughts and Observations
• We have an AMAZING Community that has come together so quickly to raise this money. A big shout out to the local bar and restaurant community that moved mountains to hold so many of these fundraisers. Also, we are thankful for so many individuals and small businesses that raised money through sales of T-shirts, artwork or anything else that they could come up with to make a meaningful contribution. We will try our best to recognize these groups in one of our upcoming posts.
• While the financial contributions mean a great deal to the victims, don’t underestimate how much that the positive support the victims have witnessed through all of your efforts to support, embrace and pray for them. At Southport Cares, “we envision a Southport where the community is united in a purpose: that no member of the community goes through a crisis alone.” I would say that this community proved that vision as being correct.

Closing Comments
If anyone has questions or concerns, you can reach out to us at [email protected]. I will try to answer your questions or address any concerns. We hold ourselves accountable to the victims and all those who contributed, and we will be as transparent as we can be, but please understand that we will never compromise the privacy and confidentiality of the victims we are here to support.

We are proud and thankful to be part of such an amazing community. We have been inspired by the strength of the victims and their families. I feel proud that we have tried to do our best, in an effort we never expected we would need to handle. I am thankful for the victims and some of the major fundraisers who have helped guide us and give us advice as we worked through uncharted territory.

Thank you Southport Community. Your overwhelming support has been felt by those impacted by the shooting tragedy that happened just over a month ago. Your contributions to Southport Cares to show your support allowed us to assist in forming and funding the first meeting of a private group of survivors that came together for the first time last week. Their challenges should not be underestimated, but neither should their spirit to come together and help one another heal. They honored those lost... they cried...they shared stories, but they also took meaningful steps forward. They also wanted to show their appreciation so they all signed their messages of thanks to the community on a beautiful painting based on the original from local artist Katie Lewis. We hate that this happened in Southport. We continue to pray for all those impacted. But there is no better community than ours to rally around these people and it matters. We also would like to thank the Clubs of St James for being a wonderful host for this private but meaningful event. Southport is Strong. Southport Does Care. Community Matters...

Southport Cares has been working with the families of those tragically killed in the mass shooting. They are all very appreciative of the support from our community during such a difficult time. The family of Michael Durbin reached out and wanted to share their thanks to the community as well. We are honored to share the following from Michael's daughter, Jamie. Please continue to keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

Hello, my name is Jamie and my dad, Michael Durbin, passed away during the tragedy at American Fish Company. My family and I wanted to reach out and express our deepest gratitude to the Southport community for your kindness, prayers, and support.

Southport was my Dad’s happy place. He began vacationing at Oak Island as a kid and the tradition continued as our family grew- bringing friends and family together here year after year. Two years ago, my parents built their dream vacation home in Southport. The town is an integral part of our family and we have thousands of wonderful memories here. It was my parents' happy place. My Dad had many local friends and we even got the State Port Pilot delivered to our home in Ohio. He loved to read all the “happy news”. The weekend my Dad was taken from us, he had just picked up his dream boat and was taking it out for test drives. He capped off his perfect day by visiting his favorite bar. I take a lot of comfort in knowing that he passed in his favorite place, at his favorite bar, listening and dancing to music.

My dad was a happy and faithful-filled man. He found joy in each day and that joy could be felt by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, friend, and soon-to-be grandpa. The world was a brighter place with him in it, and he will be deeply missed. Thank you again for all the thoughts and prayers, we appreciate it more than you know. —The Durbin Family
