A look back at K-PALS’ Fifth Annual Networking and Fundraising Event in Denver! 💙

This year’s gathering felt like a family reunion with a purpose! It was chance to reconnect, reflect on five years of progress, share updates from KIOCH, and look ahead to the work still to come. We also celebrated Dr. Binita Kharel Nepal’s years of leadership as she passed the presidency to Dr. Dilli Bhurtel and welcomed a new chapter for K-PALS.

A very special thank-you to Binisha Shrestha and the Colorado Nepalese Community for organizing the event and welcoming the K-PALS family to Colorado with such warmth. We are equally grateful to everyone who traveled from near and far, joined us locally, supported us online, volunteered their time, or helped behind the scenes.

After a little Denver sightseeing, everyone headed home until next year, but the mission continues of course! None of the progress made over the past five years would have been possible without this community, and we hope you will continue alongside us as we work to expand access to pediatric healthcare for children across Nepal. 🇳🇵

The 5th Networking Event of K-PALS (KIOCH Partners of America), the U.S.-based partner organization of the Kathmandu Institute of Child Health (KIOCH), was held on September 5th in Colorado.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the effort to attend, support, and stand with this meaningful cause. Your presence, encouragement, and continued support mean a great deal to K-PALS and to the children and families served through KIOCH.
Together, we continue to build stronger partnerships for children’s health in Nepal. 🙏❤️

My heart is full as I reflect on yesterday. ❤️

Our 5th Annual K-PALS gathering in Colorado was another reminder that this mission has never been about numbers in a room. It is about the people who show up, believe, contribute, and choose to become part of something bigger than themselves.

To everyone who joined us, supported us, traveled to be with us, and opened your hearts to the children of Nepal, thank you. You are part of this mission.

A very special thank you to Binisha Shrestha for taking this on and bringing our gathering to Colorado, and to the Colorado community, our delegates, volunteers, partners, and guests who welcomed and supported us so warmly.

Yesterday was also deeply personal for me. It marked my final day serving as President of K-PALS.

As I stood there, I found myself thinking about the countless hours over the past few years that we have spent together, brainstorming, planning, calling, meeting, sometimes dreaming big and sometimes solving the smallest details, always asking the same question: How can we do more for KIOCH and for the children of Nepal?

K-PALS has truly become my second family. Although my chapter as President has ended, my commitment to this mission certainly has not. I am grateful to continue serving on the Board and supporting this work in every way I can.

And I could not be more excited to pass the leadership to Dr Dilli Bhurtel. Dr Bhurtel, I look forward to supporting you, cheering for you, and watching K-PALS grow under your leadership. ❤️

We are also honored to welcome Divas Neupane to the K-PALS Board as he steps into the important role of Treasurer, following Dr. Bishow Aryal’s years of dedicated service in that position.

Bishow, thank you for the tremendous responsibility you have carried and for your years of dedication and stewardship of K-PALS. Those are certainly big shoes to fill.

And Divas ji, we have absolute confidence in you. We are honored to have you on the Board and grateful that you have stepped forward to take on this responsibility. We know K-PALS will be in excellent hands.

We are equally honored to welcome Dr Hem Raj Regmi to the Board. His heart for service, commitment to children, and belief in building a lasting legacy make him a wonderful addition to the K-PALS family.

Shailee Basnet, thank you for sharing your extraordinary journey and reminding all of us what courage, resilience, teamwork, and purpose can accomplish.

A very special shoutout to Som ji and Gokarna ji. Neither could be with us physically, yet both reached across the miles with generous contributions and continued support. We truly felt your presence and your spirit in the room. Thank you for continuing to believe in this mission.

Dr Bhagawan Koirala, quite simply, none of us would have been gathered there around this mission if you had not first paved the path. Thank you for continuing to dream bigger for Nepal’s children and for turning that vision into care, one child and one community at a time. Nepal has a true gem in you.

And Sandra Ma’am, what a joy it was to finally meet you in person. There is a kindness and warmth about you that can simply be felt by being around you. ❤️

To Prakash Paudel, Dilli Ram Poudel and Bishow, the founders of K-PALS, thank you for having the vision to create a bridge through which those of us living thousands of miles away can meaningfully support KIOCH and the children of Nepal.

Thank you to ANMF President, Dr. Narayan Neupane for joining us and standing alongside this shared mission.

And Shraddha, thank you for making the journey and showing up once again. Giving your time and talent for the children of Nepal means more than you know, and I am deeply grateful to you.

One of my favorite things about these annual gatherings is that they have started to feel like a family reunion with a purpose. Min ji and Sajani ji, Rajesh ji, Nirabh and so many familiar faces, it was wonderful to see you again.

And we certainly felt the absence of members of our K-PALS family who could not be with us this year: Prakash, Roshan Lal Shrestha, Dilli, Radhesh Pandit ji, Neha Sharma, and Sagun Raj Lage. We missed you and carried you with us.

As one chapter closes and another begins, what stays with me most is gratitude.

Leadership changes.
The light changes hands.
But the mission continues.

And I will continue to be right here, alongside this K-PALS family, doing my part for the children of Nepal.

The disaster in Nepal has received an extraordinary amount of attention around the world. As a Nepali, we only wish Nepal were in the headlines for any other reason.

These past few days have been emotionally exhausting. Every photograph, every video, every new story of a family searching for someone, a home washed away, or an entire community devastated makes the distance between Colorado and Nepal feel both enormous and very small.

So many people are understandably focused right now on those who have died and those who are still missing. We mourn them deeply. But very soon, another reality will become impossible to ignore: the thousands of survivors who will have to rebuild their lives.

Families have lost homes and livelihoods. Children have lost stability, schools and sometimes the people who cared for them. There will be injuries that need treatment, trauma that will not disappear when the headlines do, and health needs that will continue for months and years.

This is where our work must continue.

We are grateful to see KIOCH Partners of America (K-PALS) establish a Children’s Disaster Fund at the Kathmandu Institute of Child Health (KIOCH), beginning with an initial commitment of $20,000. The fund will help children affected by this disaster receive treatment and care while also creating a mechanism to respond to future emergencies.

And next week, on September 5, we have an opportunity right here in Colorado to do something meaningful.

After weeks of planning, phone calls, invitations, messages, meetings and outreach, Colorado Nepalese Community is now off to give one final push for Dr. Bhagawan Koirala and the K-PALS fundraising event.

Before this disaster, we were gathering around a vision: Dr. Koirala’s extraordinary mission to expand quality children’s healthcare across Nepal.

Today, that mission feels even more urgent.

The children who survive this disaster will need us long after the television cameras leave. Hospitals will need resources. Families will need help. Nepal’s recovery will not happen in a week or a month.

So this week, we are asking our Colorado community—Nepalis, friends of Nepal, nonprofits, businesses, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and everyone who has reached out asking, “What can I do?”—to stand with us.

Come on September 5. Meet Dr. Koirala. Hear directly about the work. Give what you can. Help us turn heartbreak into something that can save and rebuild young lives.

No contribution is too small when it becomes part of a collective effort.

For CNC, this is not simply about organizing another fundraiser. It is about being there when our homeland needs us. We may live thousands of miles away, but Nepal’s pain is our pain, and its recovery is something we can help carry.

It has been a long and emotional few days, and there is much more work ahead.

But tonight, we keep going.

One final push. One community. One purpose. For Nepal. For its children. For their future. 🇳🇵❤️

Nepal is facing a devastating humanitarian crisis.

On August 26, catastrophic flash floods tore through communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading, sweeping away homes and causing widespread damage to roads, bridges, health facilities, water systems, and communication networks. Hundreds of people have lost their lives, hundreds more remain missing, and thousands of families are now facing displacement, grief, and uncertainty. More than 17,000 children are reported to be in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

For those asking how they can help, K-PALS is sharing the Government of Nepal’s official Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund donation portal, operated through Nepal Clearing House. The portal accepts domestic and international card payments.

Nepal is once again facing devastating floods, and many families urgently need help.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has reached out, shared information, and looked for ways to support those affected.
