The youngest students in our program are still learning to keep a beat with their hands. The oldest have learned to internalized tempo and rhythm.

It starts with clapping, singing, learning to listen to the person next to them before they ever picked up an instrument. Rhythm games and simple songs build the same skills that carry a young musician through years of ensemble work: focus, memory, patience, the ability to hear yourself as part of something larger than yourself.

A good number of the musicians in that orchestra will go on to teach the next round of three and four year olds clapping through pat-a-cake.

Students become teachers. Teachers become mentors. The room keeps refilling itself.

If you want to help keep that cycle going, our link is in the bio. Every gift supports both ends of it: the youngest students starting out and the young leaders teaching them.

A room full of technicians in training. Music schools represented from across Haiti at this year’s piano repair workshop.

From July 27 to August 8, 7 participants completed an intensive training program, earning an official certificate in Formation à l’accord et à la réparation de pianos (Piano Tuning and Repair Training). Since 2014, BLUME Haiti repair workshops have trained 170+ technicians in string, wind, and now piano repair, work that keeps instruments in students’ hands instead of lost to damage.

This training was made possible in partnership with Music Fund asbl (Belgium) and CEMUCHA. Many thanks goes out to Spike Taylor, piano tuner and lead instructor, Spin Joseph, President of CEMUCHCA, and Alexandra Gelhay, Music Fund’s director.

We are grateful to spread knowledge that outlasts any single instrument, any single workshop, any single year.

That’s also what Make-A-Will Month is about, gifts built to outlast us. If this work matters to you, we invite you to learn about the John Jost Legacy Circle.

Mèsi anpil!

To every teacher in our BLUME Haiti partner school programs, we thank you.

Across our network of 70+ partner schools, teachers are subsidized, supported, and trusted to lead the work that matters most, showing up for their students day after day, even when conditions make that hard.

Take Jonel Etienne. We met him in 2015 as a student at summer camp in Cap-Haïtien. By the next summer, he was teaching. Today he's shaping young musicians across the south of Haiti.

And then there's Janet, our executive director, who is 30 years into teaching music in Haiti this summer. Three decades of showing up, building trust, and believing in Haiti's young musicians.

$25 supports one teacher for a week. $100 keeps one teacher in the classroom for a month. Link in bio.

Thank you to every teacher building this work, one class at a time.

Women who began as students at the Dessaix-Baptiste Music School in Jacmel are now conducting orchestras, teaching, and running the music library, creating a leadership pipeline built through years of investing in our youngest musicians.

“This work empowers young people to improve their economic and social conditions,” says Program Manager Derazin Lanaud.

That’s especially true for girls and young women across our partner network, who make up nearly half of BLUME Haiti’s summer camp participants each year.

Our team is in Jacmel this week for the first time since 2021, working with nearly 400 young musicians in the school’s mini-camp. We’re also celebrating BLUME Haiti’s selection as one of 139 organizations worldwide for a D’Addario Foundation Community Music Grant.

This August, Make-A-Will Month is a meaningful way to help the next generation of young women in music continue this path. Mèsi anpil.

Yesterday marked ten years since we lost our friend and colleague, Shane Summers. He came to Haiti three times to teach, in 2008, 2015, and 2016, at the École de Musique Sainte Trinité, the Ecole De Musique Dessaix-Baptiste, and at Cemuchca.

A remarkable pianist, Shane's kindness, humor, and passion for teaching continue to inspire us. Today, his photograph hangs in one of the main teaching rooms at the central CEMUCHCA campus in Cap Haïtien, a space where young pianists gather each day to learn, practice, and dream.

Those students may never have known Shane, but they are part of the musical community he helped build.

To honor his life and his love of teaching, we are proud to launch the Shane Summers Piano Scholarship Fund, ensuring that talented young pianists across Haiti continue to have the opportunities that meant so much to him.

If Shane touched your life, we hope you'll join us in celebrating his remarkable legacy.

Four clarinets, four lines, one conversation. Somewhere on camp grounds this week, a clarinet quartet is threading counterpoint together, each part distinct until it locks into place.

And that’s just one corner of camp. Nearby, an oboist is sitting outside, working out a melody’s rhythm on her own.

Two trumpet players are finding harmony in a slow andante, testing how far they can stretch a phrase with vibrato and expression.

A violin teacher is guiding four young musicians through a rhythmic passage that keeps tripping them up, until it doesn’t.

Different pockets of practice, same process: real challenge, real mentorship, and enough room to have fun without losing focus.

That’s the same thinking behind Make-A-Will Month this August. Building toward a future where these camps, and the young musicians who fill them, keep growing for years to come.

The 2026 camp season is just getting started! 🎶🎻🥁

This summer, BLUME Haiti’s network of educators is leading young musicians through rehearsals, ensembles, and performances across all ten of Haiti’s departments.

These teachers are the ones building discipline, confidence, and leadership in their students, camp after camp, year after year.

Last week’s CEMUCHCA Grand Camp was one highlight, and camps continue across the country through the end of August.

Many thanks to everyone making this season possible. None of this happens without our partner schools and communities who host, feed, and show up for these young musicians every single day.
