Great Lakes Breastfeeding Webinars
GLBF Webinars
The latest in the series of free breastfeeding webinars from the Michigan Breastfeeding Network is now available for viewing:

“Dismantling Racism and Implicit Bias in Breastfeeding and Human Lactation,” presented by TaNefer L. Camara, MS-HCA, IBCLC. Click HERE to register.

Description from the presenter: Despite rising trends in initiation of breastfeeding rates, disparities persist in initiation and duration for certain racial and ethnic groups, particularly among African Americans. While breastfeeding is often painted as a personal choice there are many factors that influence one’s decision, plan, and initiation and duration. This webinar will address how racism, specifically anti-Black racism, is the root cause of disparities in breastfeeding and lactation. I will debunk the theory of implicit bias and expose how racism in its many forms shows up in lactation practice.

Case studies and parent narratives will be used to highlight the insidious ways breastfeeding is casually disrupted and undermined by medical providers, nurses, and others who interface with birthing and lactating people. We will end with recommendations for identifying racism, addressing implicit bias, and how to support and affirm Black, Indigenous and people of color in breastfeeding/chestfeeding and lactation.

The Child Tax Credit
The University of Michigan's Poverty Solutions Initiative has created a website to offer step-by-step guidance for parents to ensure they receive the expanded Child Tax Credit. The new credit is worth $3,000 per year per child ages 6-17, and $3,600 per year per child under 6 years old. It will be paid out in regular payments, not once a year. If your families have children under 18, they may be eligible even if they do not usually file taxes or have low/no earnings.

National Women's Health Week
National Women’s Health Week (NWHW) is a weeklong health observance led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health (OWH). The week of May 9-15, 2021 serves as a reminder for women and girls, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19, to make their health a priority and take care of themselves. It is extremely important for all women and girls, especially those with underlying health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and women 65 years and older, to take care of your health now.

For additional information and links to resources, check out the NWHW website.

04/12/2021

The fourth annual national Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) campaign, founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, will be a week of awareness, activism, and community building intended to:

Deepen the national conversation about Black maternal health in the US;
Amplify community-driven policy, research, and care solutions;
Center the voices of Black Mamas, women, families, and stakeholders;
Provide a national platform for Black-led entities and efforts on maternal health, birth and reproductive justice; and
Enhance community organizing on Black maternal health.
Black Maternal Health Week takes place every year from April 11 –17. The month of April is recognized in the United States as National Minority Health Month – a month-long initiative to advance health equity across the country on behalf of all racial and ethnic minorities.

The campaign and activities for Black Maternal Health Week serve to amplify the voices of Black mamas and center the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements. Activities during BMHW are rooted in human rights, reproductive justice, and birth justice frameworks.

Review the BMMA Social Media Toolkit.

Conversations for Black Maternal Health Week
Birth Equity and Justice SJC Presents “Conversations for Black Maternal Health Week”. Guests over the course of next week will include state legislators, an obstetrician, pediatrician, midwife, OB nurses, one mother’s story, and doulas and social workers who do community-based care.

ARTICLE: Working Agenda for Black Mothers
The Association of Black Cardiologists hosted the Black Maternal Heart Health Roundtable-a collaborative task force to tackle the maternal health crisis in the Black community. The roundtable intended to lead the charge in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality through advocacy, education, research, and collaborative efforts. The goal of this roundtable was to identify current barriers at the community, patient, and clinician level and expand on the efforts required to coordinate an effective approach to reducing these statistics in the highest risk populations. This is the first comprehensive statement on this important topic. This position paper will generate further research in disparities and promote the interest of others to pursue strategies to mitigate maternal mortality.
