Meet Em Braman, mother to Eden, a 17-year-old with Down syndrome. Em's journey as a caregiver beautifully illustrates the complexities and joys of this role.

"Watching Eden become who she is and letting her be her has been the hardest but the most rewarding," Em shares.

Em's perspective on inclusion has evolved through her caregiving experience. She now emphasizes the importance of being led by her daughter and other adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), rather than imposing her own ideas.

"As my child gets older, I see accessibility as a much larger issue than when she was younger," Em notes. She highlights the need for accommodations that go beyond physical access, such as plain language guides in museums or preview visits to medical offices to ease anxiety.

"Being a caregiver is not a burden." Em emphasizes that while parenting is a lifelong role for everyone, it simply looks different when caring for a child with disabilities.
