The Very First Pinehurst Outlook
Before Pinehurst became known around the world for golf, it was a young resort community just beginning to find its identity.
On October 15, 1897, the very first issue of The Pinehurst Outlook was published—Volume 1, Number 1. It was the beginning of what would become a remarkable record of life in Pinehurst for more than six decades.
Published as a weekly newspaper, The Pinehurst Outlook reported on village happenings, resort activities, visiting guests, new buildings, entertainments, and before long—golf. It became an important way for residents and winter visitors to stay connected and informed about life in the growing community.
The complete run of The Pinehurst Outlook survives today in the Tufts Archives at Given Memorial Library, offering an extraordinary window into Pinehurst's past.
