For many homebuyers, there's a lot to learn. Let's teach ourselves how important it is to spend less and live within our means. We could buy a cheaper car instead of having high car payments that might consume our savings. We could pay down monthly debt or credit cards and try not to get new store cards. "Buy now, pay later" payments can mess with our monthly budget and our ability to qualify. Maybe we just need to pay off one credit card, or maybe we need six months of better payment history. Another big thing to check is our subscriptions. Streaming services, apps, memberships, and other services can quietly add up to a surprisingly large amount. I am not saying we can stop eating out completely; even cutting back on delivery and takeout by half can free up money for savings. Also, we can hold off on upgrades. We all do it. A phone, tablet, or car that still works probably doesn't need to be replaced just because something newer came out. The goal isn't to give up everything we enjoy. It's to decide if owning a home is important enough to give that goal its own spot in our budget.
