Happy Halloween Film Fans. Here are some fun and frightening films to watch. Hope your day is filled with treats!

🎬 Classic Halloween Essentials
These capture the spirit of the season — nostalgia, pumpkins, and a little fright.
• Hocus Pocus (1993) – Witchy fun in Salem; pure Halloween comfort movie.
• Halloween (1978) – John Carpenter’s slasher classic that started it all.
• The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) – Perfect for both Halloween and Christmas.
• Beetlejuice (1988) – Weird, funny, and totally Tim Burton.
• Practical Magic (1998) – Sisterhood, spells, and small-town magic.

🧙‍♀️ Family-Friendly Frights
Great for a cozy night in with kids (or anyone who doesn’t want nightmares).
• Casper (1995) – A sweet ghost story with heart.
• Monster House (2006) – Underrated animated gem with real Halloween atmosphere.
• ParaNorman (2012) – Stop-motion brilliance and surprisingly deep.
• Halloweentown (1998) – Disney Channel nostalgia at its finest.
• Coraline (2009) – Creepy, clever, and gorgeously animated.

đź’€ Modern Scares
For when you want your Halloween night to feel dangerous.
• Get Out (2017) – Smart, chilling, and socially sharp.
• Hereditary (2018) – Deeply unsettling and unforgettable.
• The Conjuring (2013) – Classic haunted-house terror.
• It (2017) – Big scares, big heart, and Halloween vibes galore.
• A Quiet Place (2018) – Suspense you can feel in your bones.

🦇 Campy, Fun, or Cult Favorites
If you want something spooky and a little ridiculous.
• The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – Midnight madness and musical chaos.
• Scream (1996) – Meta, funny, and scary in all the right ways.
• The Addams Family (1991) – Dark humor with iconic style.
• Jennifer’s Body (2009) – Sharp satire with killer lines.
• Army of Darkness (1992) – Horror-comedy gold.

🕯️ Atmospheric & Gothic
Perfect if you want eerie autumn nights, not jump scares.
• Sleepy Hollow (1999) – Tim Burton at his moody, gothic best.
• Crimson Peak (2015) – Hauntingly beautiful and visually stunning.
• The Others (2001) – Classic ghost story with an unforgettable twist.
• The Witch (2015) – Creeping dread and Puritan paranoia.

Choose the candidate who will support the arts. Arts programming is essential to a thriving local economy, helping to grow the grand list and ultimately lower taxes.

A MESSAGE FROM FIRST SELECTMAN CANDIDATE TIM O’NEIL ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ART IN A COMMUNITY: Yesterday I immersed myself in art at the Southbury Arts and Culture Alliance’s Chalk Walk along Main Street. Events like this remind us that the arts are truly the heartbeat of a vibrant community. They spark creativity, connect people across generations and cultures, and enrich the lives of both residents and visitors. The arts are a powerful engine for our local economy. Arts and cultural organizations draw visitors who eat at our restaurants, shop in our stores, and stay in our hotels. Research shows that every dollar invested in the arts multiplies throughout the community, supporting jobs and strengthening small businesses. A thriving arts scene also helps us retain young people, attract new families, and make Southbury more appealing to businesses looking to grow or relocate. Thank you to SACA for everything you do to keep Southbury’s spirit alive and our economy strong. As First Selectman, I will champion art programs that build a stronger, more resilient community where businesses thrive, families flourish, and creativity drives growth.
