8 years ago today was the beginning of the end... we didn't know that in about 24-hrs after Emma started throwing up that she'd be gone. That we'd spend the day going to the pediatrician, and 2 different hospitals... it's impossible to have any of this make sense. please stay home if you're sick. please get vaccinated.

7 years ago today, Emma was diagnosed with the flu. I remember getting the call at work that she wasn't feeling well and so I met Emma and Dave at the pediatrician.

I remember talking to my mom in the car on the way there saying that I was going to demand Tamiflu because there was no way I was going to let her die from the flu (there had been a boy, Niko, who had died in CT in January).

Little did I know at that moment, that there was no way to demand Tamiflu. It just wasn't available. They couldn't even test her for flu because they didn't have enough tests. But the doctor we saw said she had the flu. To take her home and rest. Keep her hydrated.

Our hearts would shatter less than 5 days later.

Emma was vaccinated. She wasn't that sick... she ended up having viral myocarditis which meant that the virus went to her heart (which can happen with ANY virus) along with Sepsis. Didn't even know that was a thing. Didn't know people died from the flu until that year.

PLEASE GET THE FLU SHOT. It's a dead virus so you CANNOT get the actual flu with it. You can get flu-like symptoms (just like with any vax).

In 2024 we continued to support Concord Magnet School (Emma's elementary school) by both DonorsChoose donations and through school fundraising events so students could participate (i.e.: cookie decorating, spirit wear, book fair, movie/pizza night, amongst other things). We also supported PAWS, scholarships for girls at Mercy High School and other education funds, Rays Animal Planet, PAWS - Pet Animal Welfare Society of Norwalk, Connecticut, Little Britches Therapeutic Riding, Cystic Fibrosis research, sent 8 kids to camp, and helped moms thrive and babies get a great start in life via Friends of NYC Nurse Friends of New York City Nurse Family Partnership

February is in full swing, and so is the flu. At just 6 ½ years old, Emma Splan tragically lost her life to the flu, which attacked her heart and caused viral myocarditis.

Families Fighting Flu is here to remind you that it’s crucial to protect your young ones, especially as they head to school during flu surges. Let’s keep your schools healthy and thriving by:

- Washing hands
- Covering our nose and mouths while coughing and sneezing
- Getting your flu shot

In one hour, 6 years ago it all went to s**t. And roughly 24hrs after that, you’d be gone. And now it’s 6 years later. How we have survived without you is a mystery. You are loved and missed everyday. Thank you for lily. Thank you for being you. For being kind and sweet and funny and just all the good in the world. We love you and miss you beyond words that exist in this world. Please come visit in our dreams.

Your memory lives on in stories, kindness, and helping others. 6 years…. And yet it feels like it’s happening all over again every day. I miss your voice and the smell of your hair. I miss you trying to sneak us and telling jokes and wanting to be read to. And of bedtime rituals that I thought took too long but I miss so much. I miss everything about you and I’ll love you for all of our lifetimes together. Family is forever .

Hoping everyone who knew you, know of you now, or even just knows someone like you, I hope they do something kind today. Help someone who is struggling but won’t ask for help. Smile at someone. Ask them how they’re really doing. Tell a silly joke. Get the ice cream.
