⛳🦁 FORE! The Lions Golf Tournament Was a Roaring Success! 🦁⛳
Friday, May 15, Heritage Country Club sounded a little different. Instead of birds chirping, it was:
"FORE!"
"Nice shot!"
"I swear that ball went straight!"
…and occasionally,
"Has anyone seen my golf ball?" 😂
Despite weather forecasts that had many of us checking radar apps every 15 minutes, Mother Nature gave us a break and delivered a pretty nice day for the Southbridge Lions Club's 15th Annual Al DiPietro Memorial Golf Tournament.
The turnout was outstanding, with 33 teams taking part! Golfers came from all over and represented just about every group imaginable—local businesses, community leaders, generations of family, retired teachers, longtime friends, and plenty of golfers who may have spent more time searching for golf balls than putting. 🏌️‍♂️😄
What made the day truly special wasn't just the golf—it was the people. This tournament is a community event, and it takes an army of volunteers to make it happen.
👏 A huge thank you to our golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters. From registration and raffles to contests, setup, cleanup, food service, and countless behind-the-scenes tasks, our volunteers helped make the day run smoothly from the first tee shot to the last raffle prize.
👏 A special thank-you also goes out to the businesses and individuals whose generosity helped make this year's tournament such a success. Prize and raffle donations were generously provided by Ed Galonek Sr., Finally Lisa's Hair Salon, Southbridge Credit Union, Micknucks, Chris Ciukaj, Incisal Edge Dental Studio, and Sunshine Bakery.
⛳ We are equally grateful to our Tee Hole Sponsors, whose support helped keep the tournament on course: All Star Incentive, Arland Tool, Bruso Trucking, Charlton Oil, Corner Pocket, Dr. Natalie Stanley, Garieri Jewelers, Paul's Automotive, Pizza Chef, Plaza Auto Parts, Rubens Transport, Sawdust Coffee House, Soper Construction, Southbridge Credit Union, Teddie G's, Tutti Quanti, VCOS AUX, VCOS, Dave's Pest Control, Sturbridge Metallurgical, Economy Canvas, Place Motor, Kerrin Graphics, A & M Tool and Die, and Central Mass Sunrooms.
Special thanks also to Heritage Country Club for being a wonderful host and helping provide a great experience for everyone involved.
The final numbers are still being tallied, but one thing is already clear: the real winners are the individuals and community organizations that will benefit from the funds raised through this event.
And yes... the raffle prizes were outstanding, including not one, but TWO big-screen TVs! 📺📺
Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. Whether you golfed, volunteered, sponsored a hole, donated a prize, bought raffle tickets, or simply supported the event, you helped make a difference in our community.
We'll see you on the course next year! 🦁⛳

🛑💻 Protecting Yourself from Scams and Fraud 💻🛑
At this week’s meeting, Lion Gary Fontaine introduced Sarah Clarke and Christina Abbott from Southbridge Credit Union, who presented an important and eye-opening program to the Southbridge Lions Club on bank fraud and scams, especially those targeting seniors.
Sarah shared true local stories that demonstrated just how common and heartbreaking these scams can be. She reminded members that scammers are highly skilled at deception, with one goal in mind — gaining your trust and convincing you to hand over your hard-earned money.
⚠️ Important reminders from the presentation:
• Never download an app that allows someone else access to your phone or computer
• Do not call phone numbers that appear on pop-up “Tech Support” messages
• Do not click suspicious documents or links sent by email or text
• Never give remote access to your device to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly
Sarah also emphasized that the following organizations would never instruct you to withdraw cash from your accounts:
• Microsoft, Amazon, or other “Tech Support” companies
• Local police, State Police, the FBI, or the Department of Justice
• Any legitimate local or national bank
The presentation sparked many thoughtful questions from club members, along with a few honest stories from those who had personally encountered scam attempts.
While the methods continue to evolve with technology, the underlying goal remains the same — criminals attempting to exploit trust and fear to steal money.
Sarah closed the evening with an important reminder: slow down, think carefully about what you are being told, and ask for help if something does not feel right. Trust your local bank, local police department, or someone you know before taking action.
Most importantly, do not be embarrassed. These scams happen every day, and seeking help is the smartest thing you can do.
Thank you to Sarah Clarke, Christina Abbott, and Southbridge Credit Union for bringing such a valuable and timely program to our club and community, and to Gary Fontaine for presenting the program.

🍷 Tuesday night was Wine Night, Lions! 🦁
One of our all-time favorite traditions is back — and tonight did not disappoint!
We welcomed our talented local “Master Wine Makers” to share their creations, and the clubhouse was buzzing with great conversation, laughter, and (of course) some serious tasting. With 6 homemade wines and 1 mystery commercial wine thrown into the mix, things got interesting fast!
Our program host, Jim Keys, kicked things off by having each guest introduce themselves, share their wine-making journey, and describe what they brought. Let’s just say — the experience in that room was impressive!
Then came the fun part… 🍷
Blind tasting and secret ballots! No labels, no clues — just pure taste.
After careful “research” (and a few generous pours into those classic plastic cups), the votes were in…
🏆 Winner: Wine #2 — Jason Cantara!
Not his first victory either — clearly, he knows what he’s doing!
All in all, it was a fantastic night filled with great people, great stories, and even better wine. Nights like this are what make our Lions Club so special.
Already looking forward to next year! 🍇🍷

🦁👏 Supporting Education & Community Pride! 👏🦁

Steve Merriam accepts a thank-you on behalf of the Southbridge Lions Club from Debbie Schiro of the Optical Heritage Museum in recognition of the club’s support for the museum’s educational programs.

The Southbridge Lions Club was proud to be recognized during the Optical Heritage Museum’s recent murder mystery fundraising dinner, “Murder at the Museum,” held on Saturday, April 18, at 12 Crane Street.

At the close of the evening, museum directors thanked supporters and gave special recognition to the Southbridge Lions for their $500 contribution to help fund educational programs for students in Southbridge and surrounding communities.

The Southbridge Lions are honored to support organizations that enrich our community, preserve local history, and create learning opportunities for local students. Thank you to the Optical Heritage Museum for all you do to inspire future generations!
