20% of formerly incarcerated people report suffering from food insecurity - double that of the general population– with even higher rates among formerly incarcerated women and Black individuals.

The RESTORE Act of 2023 (H.R.3479 and S.1753) which would remove the national lifetime ban from SNAP for individuals with felony drug convictions. Everyone should have access to food, and punishing individuals by restricting this access does nothing to improve public safety or discourage unhealthy behavior.

With, 91% of individuals suffering from food insecurity upon release from incarceration, it is imperative that Congress ensure equal access to food benefits regardless of one’s past.

Okay let’s get ready to advocate!

Every five years, Congress has the ability to bring forth a farm bill – a robust piece of legislation that outlines the United States’ agricultural and food policies, including programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The farm bill holds solutions to some of the most urgent issues facing Americans today.

The inclusion of bipartisan legislation that sets underserved families and those impacted by the justice system up for long-term success by addressing food insecurity accessibility issues.

Congress bills H.R.3479 and S.1753 (Restore Act of 2023) which would remove the national lifetime ban from SNAP for individuals with felony drug convictions. Everyone should have access to food, and punishing individuals by restricting this access does nothing to improve public safety or discourage unhealthy behavior.

Here is a fact sheet to review before we start contacting members of Congress to pass a comprehensive, bipartisan farm bill this Congress.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT‼️

By filling out the personal information on the link, you can choose whether to send their lawmakers an email and/or call their lawmakers’ office to make their voices heard.

Strong communities and individuals need reliable and accessible food security including formerly incarcerated individuals, who are striving for stability and self-sufficiency need a farm bill that helps them get there.

🌟 Building a Vision for a Second Chance 🌟

Our TechRise: Women in Reentry cohort is hard at work creating vision boards to help visualize their second chance at life! These boards are an incredible way for the ladies to reflect on what they truly want and need to build the lives they deserve.

A huge shoutout to our amazing board secretary, Angela Dawson, for hosting these transformative workshops. Her guidance is helping the women focus on their goals and gain the confidence to move forward.

Each of these women is nonviolent and ready to activate their new lives with hope, determination, and a clear vision of the future. We’re so proud of their progress and can’t wait to share more of their journey with you!
