Adiva Mcquarter ~ Southaven High

Hello, my name is Adiva Mcquarter . I am currently a senior at South Haven High School. With graduation on the horizon, I'm thrilled to share that I'll be attending Ole Miss in the spring, where I'll be pursuing the nursing program with aspirations of becoming an anesthesiologist.
I've been deeply involved in various extracurricular activities and leadership roles. Currently serving as the Vice President of my senior class, I've had the privilege of representing my peers and contributing to our school community in meaningful ways. Additionally, I've been actively involved in Key Club, Bolt Buddy, Student Ambassadors, and have proudly served as the Tennis Captain and a member of the Dance Team. Being part of the Honor Society has also been a highlight of my high school experience, allowing me to excel academically while giving back to my community

$500 W.E Bingham Scholarship Winner:

My name is Carlos Hicks Jr, I’m a senior at Lake Cormorant High School that plans to attend Mississippi State University in the fall. I am currently graduating as 10th in my class with a 4.3 GPA (weighted) and graduate of special distinction. Furthering my education at MSU, I’ll major in biomedical engineering and after graduating, pursue my dream career of becoming a research and development engineer (preferably at Medtronic) due to my love of researching and curious nature.
Outside of academics, I compete in the sport of Powerlifting where I am a three-time state champion and one-time national champion. Competing in the sport not only allows me to continue to work at improving myself and learning accountability but to also practice leadership and social skills that teach me to both work with and guide a variety of people. I will continue to powerlift in MSU’s barbell club and intend to eventually become president of the club. Balancing both good academics and athletics gives me a sense of being “well-rounded” and allows me to gain perspectives that on life and others experiences that I may not have other-wised had, with the experience I’ve gained throughout high school I’m confident in myself to keep the standard I’ve set for myself in my time as a full-time student in college.

Alzheimer Awareness Month

Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases.

Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer's are 65 and older. Alzheimer’s disease is considered to be younger-onset Alzheimer’s if it affects a person under 65. Younger-onset can also be referred to as early-onset Alzheimer’s. People with younger-onset Alzheimer’s can be in the early, middle or late stage of the disease.

Alzheimer's worsens over time. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. On average, a person with Alzheimer's lives 4 to 8 years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or another dementia, you are not alone. The Alzheimer's Association is the trusted resource for reliable information, education, referral and support to millions of people affected by the disease.
