Ma's House & BIPOC Art Studio, Inc. A communal BIPOC Art Studio on Shinnecock Reservation in NY. Open Thursdays and Sundays 10 am to 5pm weekly and year round!

My name is Jeremy Dennis and I am an indigenous artist and photographer raised on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation at “Ma’s House” in the eastern end of Long Island, New York. My grandmother, Loretta Silva, also known as Princess Silva Arrow of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, was affectionately called “Ma” by her children and grandchildren. She passed away in 1998 when I was 8 years old. We still c

all the home where we lived with her “Ma’s House”, and it was always filled with so much love and warmth, welcoming all who came to visit and spend time with our family. My mother told me that when she was young, Ma held mini-powwows with the whole family and other tribe members dancing and singing in our traditional regalia at the house. People from everywhere, even foreign countries, would visit the house and also partake in viewing Native craftwork, handmade beadwork, and enjoy pony rides, archery, as well as eat traditional Indian corn, cooked in the earth layered under seaweed. It’s a huge financial and physical undertaking to restore “Ma’s House” and the Silva family home. With very limited resources my grandfather, Peter Silva, Sr., traditional Chief of the Hassanamisco Band of Indians, of Grafton, Massachusetts, scraped together what he could to build this unique house for Ma and their 6 children about 65 years ago. My mother found a picture of her father salvaging the wood and windows for the house from a Clergy house that was due to be demolished so the materials used for the home may well be over 100 years old. My direct family as well as my aunts, uncles, and cousins have lived at “Ma’s House” and sustained it until recent years with its leaky plumbing, dry rot/mold areas, unfinished basement, and outdated furnace. Ma had always wanted her house to be an educational museum space, a safe haven for all, and a place where arts and culture bring people together. As Ma’s youngest grandchild, I’m determined to uphold my grandmother’s wishes. All of the health disparities and economic injustice within minority communities that have become clear during the COVID-19 pandemic and rise of social justice activism against police brutality, bigotry, and systemic racism show, to me, a deep urgency for artists who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or People of Color (BIPOC) to have safe spaces for free creativity and healing. I believe that “Ma’s House” can provide this space for BIPOC artists and all people who support and uphold moral values for equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Ma's House Collection & Works for Sale - From Elan's open studios titled 'Ashawagh - a place between' In Eastern Algonquin language Ashawagh may translate to "a place between" and artist Elan Cadiz felt this was the best way to explain the treacherous limbo that the Shinnecock Nation had suffered due the unmitigated colonization and physical and spiritual violence practiced against Indigenous peoples and their land.

ON VIEW in "MOTHERLAND": Tlingit Cosmic Expressions (1 of 3), Found papers on watercolor paper, 2026, by Ursala Hudson (Kadusné).
The gestural shapes sliced from paper in these collages draw from ancestral Tlingit design principles found in carved, painted, and beaded works. They are composed with paper cut from a vintage homemaker manual and a textbook on astronomy - texts used to transmit knowledge to housewives and children. Prior to the implementation of the isolating nuclear family structure, knowledge was passed through storytelling and intergenerational relationships, where systems of understanding were interconnected and moved across lived experience. The separation of these systems has shaped how we understand place, value, and our own sense of connection. These collages act as a material practice of reflecting on fractured knowledge systems and reconfiguring them, restoring a sense of beauty within a disjointed world.

"Motherland - Visions of Home & Belonging" is organized by Ma's House Director of Curation, Brianna L. Hernández. Hours are Thursdays & Sundays 10am-5pm or by appointment. Explore our Bloomberg Connects app to learn more about the artists and works on view!

Ma's House Collection & Works for Sale - Death is one of life’s few universal experiences. As long as people are born, people will die. And as long as people have
died, artists have played an integral role in creating cultural death practices. Beginning with the history of funerary arts
and connecting these ongoing traditions to contemporary fine art, Reclaiming Death: Art, Ritual, Advocacy, presents
the living legacy of art in honoring end-of-life.

Reclaiming Death began as a research project by artist, curator, and death doula, Brianna L. Hernández as part of Hyperallergic’s Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curators. The series of online articles grew into an in-
person exhibition at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio, and most recently hosted an open call for the publication and 2nd in-person exhibition.

Featured artists present personal and culturally significant relationships to grief and death in ways that address
inequities in deathcare, provide healing and community, and connect deeply to heritage. Our collective relationship to
death and dying is inextricably tied to our humanity and mending that relationship directly impacts all we experience in
life. Reclaiming Death is an ongoing pursuit of this mending which requires the communal effort of every participating
artist and their unique approach to deathwork.

ON VIEW in "MOTHERLAND": Lessie's Box, Mixed Media in Shadow Box, 2024, by Lisa Bowen.

My work centers on gathering, arranging and presenting personal and family histories using a wide range of materials and techniques. Using historical documents, photographs, maps and objects, I create memory boxes and art pieces that honor those who are no longer with us. It is my way of preserving and sharing history while highlighting someone's life in a small yet creative and engaging way. I hope viewers make connections to my subjects, their stories and the forces that shaped their lives. Lessie's Box is a collection of documents and chosen items that tell the story of Lessie Beaman (1892-1913), a young Shinnecock girl who lived at The Thomas Asylum for Orphan and Destitute Indian Children on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in upstate New York. Although Lessie had family, she lived at the Thomas Indian School from the age of five until her tragic passing in 1913. Raised under the care of New York State as an inmate, both Lessie and her older brother Leroy were separated from family, culture and their homelands. Their mother attempted to regain custody of her children but was unsuccessful. Using historical documents, photographs, and everyday objects, this piece offers a glimpse into the brief and poignant life of a young girl, who was forever far from home.
