In 2007, Team Doryan was formed on behalf of Doryan Torres Carrillo, a vibrant and energetic little boy who courageously battled a rare form of brain cancer. During the family’s ordeal, a need to assist and help guide other families going through the same situation grew stronger. Even though Doryan’s family was experiencing new and challenging experiences, their need to support and help bring back
a sense of normalcy to other families grew strong. Team Doryan was created for several reasons: to create lasting memories of his precious life, to let him enjoy those things often taken for granted on a daily basis, and to serve our community and bring awareness of childhood cancers and/or serious medical conditions. The core of Team Doryan is to help families who are facing one of life’s most difficult challenges: a serious medical diagnosis. Some of the ways Team Doryan assists families is through raising much-needed awareness to benefit families; such is the example of the annual Team Doryan/Doryan Torres Carrillo Blood and Toy Drive in partnership with members of the South Gate Police Department and sponsored by the Blood Donor Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. During the past few years, it has successfully raised much-need blood and blood products, which are used by the young patients hospitalized at CHLA. Team Doryan has also organized community food, clothing, and toy drives to help other needy families in the community during the holiday season as well as collecting school supplies through the “Back to School Backpack” project, which provided these supplies including backpacks to children and families who may not be able to purchase these items due to financial hardship. The mission of Team Doryan is to help families whose child is undergoing a serious medical condition through support, events, and raising much-needed awareness throughout the community.
