The U.S. Army celebrated its 251st birthday today. It is also Flag Day. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

Congratulations to our 2026 Poster and Essay Contest winners, who were presented to the Town Council last evening. First place essay winners read their essays to the Council. A wonderful job was done by all.

The skies have turned blue today, the day of “memorials,” as we honor those who have given with their ultimate sacrifice so that we all may have our lives. Thank you to Art Sladyk, American Legion Post #133, for capturing this picture as the sun came out. Thank you also to Danny Scudder, SGT, US Army Retired, for one of the most memorial speeches I have ever heard. To all the men and women who serve or have served, thank you. Simply, thank you.

A huge thank you to all town services for enabling the Commission to have a very successful Armed Forces Day celebration yesterday, culminating in outstanding fireworks enjoyed by thousands. Thank you also to our Town Council which has also supported the Commission and its work throughout the years.

South Windsor’s 2026 Armed Forces Day celebration at Nevers Park was a huge success. The community gathered for an incredible evening featuring food trucks, live music, and kid-friendly activities, which culminated in a spectacular fireworks display.

A huge shout out to Mihika Joshi, Senior, SWHS, whose idea of honoring veterans as a rising 6th grader in 2020 has grown to four communities and over 350 banners to date. Thanks also to SWHS and Principal Joe LeRoy for celebrating with us and to the NHS volunteers who assisted Mihika and families to celebrate their banners, as well as to Mayor Craig Zimmerman, Deputy Mayor Andy Paterna, State Senator Saud Anwar, State Rep Tom Delnicki, Councilwoman Audrey Delnicki and Board Chair Genevieve Coursey for their comments.
