WILDLIFE ALERT: BOBCAT ACTIVITY REPORTED IN EAST WEYMOUTH
Residents of East Weymouth and Weymouth at large, please be advised that a known bobcat den has been identified in the Jackson Square area near Hill Street and Grant Street.
Please use caution and avoid approaching or disturbing the den or any bobcats observed nearby.
Bobcats generally avoid people, but they are wild animals and may act defensively when protecting their young. They may also view cats, small dogs, and other small domestic animals as potential prey.
Residents are strongly advised to:
Keep cats indoors, particularly from dusk through dawn.
Do not leave small dogs or other pets outside unattended.
Keep dogs leashed and under direct supervision.
Do not approach, feed, photograph at close range, or attempt to move a bobcat or its kittens.
Secure garbage, compost, pet food, and other potential food sources.
Remove or clean up bird feeders if they are attracting squirrels, rodents, or other wildlife.
Keep children away from the den area and supervise them while outdoors.
The presence of a bobcat does not ordinarily constitute an emergency, and bobcat attacks on humans are extremely rare. Most healthy bobcats avoid people entirely and only become aggressive when sick, cornered, or conditioned. If a bobcat appears injured, unusually aggressive, disoriented, or poses an immediate threat to public safety, please call Darren King of the Weymouth Police Natural Resources/ACO Division.
