Outer Cape Chorale The Outer Cape Chorale - a community chorus presenting exciting free choral concerts since 2002.

THE OUTER CAPE CHORALE was founded in February 2002 by its conductor Jon Arterton, and several enthusiastic friends. It has quickly grown to a group of over 140 singers who travel to Provincetown from all over Cape Cod to sing. The Chorale is organized as a 501c3 non-profit organization, and has prospered due to the generous support of their community. In keeping with their philosophy of bringing their joy of singing to as many people as possible, they’ve adopted the somewhat radical policy of making their concerts free of admission charges!

Meet Paul Abraham, an OCC singer and our Tenor section leader, from Provincetown.

Q: What (or who) brought you to The Outer Cape Chorale?
A: My neighbor and good friend, Priscilla Jackett, long-time alto in OCC, convinced me to join. She knew how much I liked singing and how, at every concert, I wished I were up on stage. Unfortunately, just when I joined OCC, Priscilla had to give it up because of other commitments.

Q: When did you sing your first concert with OCC, and what sticks with you from that very first time?
A: I joined OCC in spring 2023 under the new director, Joe Dudzinski. “For the Beauty of the Earth,” a choral composition by John Rutter was the centerpiece of the concert. Soaring sopranos were joined successively by tenors, and altos and finally basses. Beautiful, inspiring and hopeful. I was hooked.

Q: Where did you first develop a love of choral singing?
A: My dad, a frustrated tenor, taught my brothers and me lots of classic songs on car trips. Section singing was also key in grade school music. In addition I sang in community theater musicals. I was also part of a small chorale (about 25 singers) in Boston for several years.

Q: Why do you sing?
A: There is nothing like the sound of beautiful music and having a part in creating that sound is a joy. There is a true sense of community within the chorus and beyond when we reach to the greater community in our concerts. What could be better in these perilous times.

Meet one of our singers! Introducing Shira Kavon (Alto 2) from Provincetown and her OCC Riser Nation profile.

Q: In a list of 5 words, describe yourself.
A: Determined; cheerful; tall; curious; dog-lover.

Q: What (or who,) brought you to The Outer Cape Chorale?
A: After singing occasionally (chiefly on Jewish holidays,) with Russell Braun (Bass), he said I would enjoy OCC, assuring me it was no-audition. (Audible sigh of relief.) Spot on, Russ! Once I began, I realized how many of the Chorale were also friends of mine, enhancing the experience even more.

Q: When did you sing your first concert with OCC, and what sticks with you from that very first time?
A: My first concert was “Glorious,” Winter 2023. Robert Grady’s “Reindeer Cantata” was delightful to sing, but my favorite from that program was the “Gloria” from “Missa Criolla.” The Andean and Argentine folkloric elements played through my mind over and over again as we prepared the concert.

Q: Where did you first develop a love of choral singing?
A: As the daughter of a Synagogue Cantor and choral conductor, choral concerts filled my early 1960’s childhood, the era of the Civil Rights Marches. I particularly remember my Dad conducting two favorites (of his, and mine,) “Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho,” and “Sit Down, Servant, I Can’t Sit Down.”

Q: Why do you sing?
A: In these times, I find singing brings me joy. It always has. Singing communally creates an extraordinary music one can’t make alone. It’s fascinating and stimulating to work as a chorus to build something beautiful.

OCC’s Artistic Director, Allison Beavan, enjoyed an intensive two-day choral conductor’s conference at the Berklee College of Music earlier this week. The conference was created by the Massachusetts American Choral Directors Association with a focus on singing as community and joy! A perfect fit for The Outer Cape Chorale! Allison cannot wait to share this rich experience with the OCC singers starting Sept. 10th!
