Christian Charities of Sumter

Christian Charities of Sumter Where do you get the food? Churches and individuals donate nonperishable food and money. Organizations have food drives to help fill the shelves.

A non-profit, interdenominational, and nondiscriminatory program to assist the hungry in Sumter County
“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in.” Matthew 25:23 We use the monetary donations to buy food from local grocers. Four local restaurants also provide extra food. We say, “Whatever comes in the door goes out to our clients

.”
Who works there? A group of around 15 unpaid volunteers work to meet the needs of our clients. Who are your clients? Most of our clients are seniors on a fixed income. Our income guidelines in 150% of the poverty level. Those clients who are 55 or older may receive up to $125 a month in food stamps and still qualify. We also help those referred to us by the Red Cross or any other agency. The policy has always been that if an individual is younger than 55 and receives food stamps, they are not eligible to receive food from us. What does a first-time client need to bring? A picture ID is needed each time a client comes for food. The first time he also needs all Social Security cards for the family, all the family’s income, and proof of food stamp status. See the back for more details.
