The Genius of Marian follows Pam White in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Her son, the film maker, works with her as she attempts to write a book that tributes her mother, the artist Marian Steele.

Routines sometimes make life less confusing for people with dementia. Predictable daily structures reduce anxiety by giving them familiar activities that also indicate the time of day. Talk with your parent about creating a daily structure that works for them if they are still in the early stages of dementia.

When a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease is received, life can feel like it stops. Finding help is critical for your journey.

There's something quite profound about awareness of our own feelings and our own bodies. It can be hard and quite challenging to be a caregiver, and the line becomes so blurred between the self and the person that you love. But it's like an airplane — you have to put your own oxygen mask on first, because only in taking care of yourself can you truly be there for another person.

Mariska Hargitay discusses her father's myeloma, hope from research and the importance of community and caregivers for patients.

For millions of Americans living with dementia, a diagnosis slowly becomes a shrinking world. Fewer choices. Less spontaneity. More safety measures. Less living.

A new village in Madison, Wisconsin is building a different answer.

The Ellen & Peter Johnson Dementia Village at Agrace is the first of its kind in the United States, modeled after the internationally recognized Hogeweyk Dementia Village in the Netherlands, a community where people with dementia live in real houses on a real street, with real neighbors, and the freedom to decide how their day goes.

Eight houses. Eight residents each. A kitchen, a front porch, a bedroom of their own. Residents can cook their own meals, go on walks alone, skip an activity, or sleep in. No institutional hallways. No staff following them around. Just life.

Housemates are matched by lifestyle and interests. A day club welcomes 40 to 50 members who live at home but come in daily for activities and community. There's even on-site housing for healthcare students training in the field.

It opens fall 2027. The waitlist isn't even open yet.

This is what care looks like when it's designed around the person, not the disease. And it's about time.

Instead of disengaging, they choose to engage even more vigorously: all four have thrown themselves into dementia activism, establishing new groups (in Hayden’s case, the Young Dementia Network; in Swaffer’s, cofounding Dementia Alliance International) or becoming active members of existing ones, like Deep (the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project), a network of people with dementia across the UK. All of them, “experts by experience”, are actively involved in research projects such as Living Well With Dementia. Swaffer is doing a PhD.

Few things are more feared than a dementia diagnosis. Now people living with the condition are fighting against damaging stereotypes and demanding proper medical support
