“There’s a message written in the constellations of this mural. The diploma is the brightest star in the sky, like a North Star, serving as our guiding goal.
Here in Utah, we live in a growing urban city, but we have to remember that we are right in the middle of this great wilderness. We are surrounded by sweeping deserts and mountains, and we share this space with the world’s best wildlife. That’s why you’ll see the bighorn sheep, mountain lion, and red fox featured right in the foreground of this piece.
I want people to interpret this work however it speaks to them, but for me, there is a deliberate juxtaposition here. It explores how we can use our education to protect our wildlife and Utah in general. So, I hope people see that reaching our guiding star isn’t just about personal success. It is about using the knowledge we gain to preserve the wild spaces (Utah) we call home.”
Beto’s finished work is featured at 220 E Morris Ave on the South Salt Lake City Hall (parking lot wall facing north).

✨ NOCTURNAL STACKS! ✨

The S-Line got a whole lot more whimsical in 2025! 🚋🎨

We are beyond excited to showcase “Nocturnal Stack,” a masterpiece by the legendary SLC local, Michael Murdock ( ).

True to Mike’s iconic style, this mural features a vibrant, gravity-defying cairn balanced atop a friendly monster, all tucked under a glowing moon and stars. 🌙👹 It’s the perfect "bright spot" designed to add a little magic to your daily commute.

The 3-Hour Hustle ⏰ This project came with a unique challenge! Because the wall is so close to the S-Line tracks, Mike had a very narrow window to operate his lift. To ensure rider safety, he could only paint between 12:00 AM and 3:00 AM each day. Talk about precision and performing under pressure! Here is a shout out to , the brave apprentice who shadowed Mike's crazy hours to assist with this mural! 👏

About the Artist You definitely know Mike’s work—he’s the mastermind behind the iconic 9th and 9th Whale (Out of the Blue)! 🐋 Whether he’s painting SLC landmarks, creating skateboard sculptures for , or crafting zines, Mike always stays true to his best advice for artists: Paint Authentically.

“This city is my home... Putting something I’ve made out into the world allows me to interact with others in the community and gives me a pretty magical personal sense of fulfillment.” — Mike Murdock

Next time you’re riding the S-Line or walking the trail, keep an eye out for the stack! 🛑👀
