“There’s a message written in the constellations of this mural. The diploma is the brightest star in the sky, like a North Star, serving as our guiding goal.
Here in Utah, we live in a growing urban city, but we have to remember that we are right in the middle of this great wilderness. We are surrounded by sweeping deserts and mountains, and we share this space with the world’s best wildlife. That’s why you’ll see the bighorn sheep, mountain lion, and red fox featured right in the foreground of this piece.
I want people to interpret this work however it speaks to them, but for me, there is a deliberate juxtaposition here. It explores how we can use our education to protect our wildlife and Utah in general. So, I hope people see that reaching our guiding star isn’t just about personal success. It is about using the knowledge we gain to preserve the wild spaces (Utah) we call home.”
Beto’s finished work is featured at 220 E Morris Ave on the South Salt Lake City Hall (parking lot wall facing north).
